The Historical Monument-Tepic Cathedral

The Cathedral of Tepic is the Catholic temple headquarters of the Diocese of Tepic. It is located in front of the main square, in the center of the city. It is famous for its neo-Gothic style cover. The first building was built around 1750 unlike the one we know today since it was of smaller proportions. At the beginning of the 19th century, it was decided to build a bigger and larger one. The works were completed in 1885. The temple was designated as a cathedral by Pope Leo XIII, on June 23, 1891, its first bishop being Ignacio Díaz y Macedo. The current façade was made by Gabriel Luna y Rodríguez, who had taken up the previous works but in neo-Gothic style, different from the neoclassical taste that prevailed at the time. He finished the last tower in the year of 1896. The interior has been modified during the 19th century, replacing the main altar with a huge cross. With a Latin cross basilica plan. It has a single nave and transept, where the octagonal dome rises, which has a lantern and is topped by an iron cross.

The facade, neo-Gothic style is very simple, has two bodies. The first presents the access arch in a three-lobed manner. In the second, the choir windows are located, two in total, with an ogive arch. The top of the facade houses a clock. To the sides of this one the two towers of three bodies are located, which present ogival arcs in each body, and are somewhat elongated so that they make that imprison the facade.

The interior is decorated with Renaissance motifs and plasterwork, highlighting the altars, neoclassical style. There is a chapel dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament, of neoclassical style. It has some paintings from the colonial era, and the choir stalls present a fine carving designed by Heliodoro Monroy.

It is considered to be the most iconic building of Tepic, and you can use the cathedral as a reference or as a meeting spot because everyone knows where it is. The Cathedral is famous for people taking lots of pictures and videos at this place.
