It doesn't really matter if the hawker fully understand you, you don't really need to know what they're saying. Food, is a universal language. You can point your finger on any food, even on the dish that people are eating at the nearby diner, the hawker will understand what do you want. However, if you don't want, don't raise your palm and waive, or you'll get a surprise 5 bowls of food served to your table. Just shake your head and show disappointed face will do.

In Penang, it feels like at every corner of the street, you'll see a restaurant. Even if there's no restaurant, there will be some sort of street hawker. It's like a magical place where you can literally smell food at every corner of Penang. Usually, I will gain weight on each visit and spoil my appetite to the max. It's not different this time headed to a "new" place for breakfast. What makes good breakfast? Some say, it's particular food they like, some said due to the coffee. Seriously, Starbucks makes good coffee, why don't you go there every morning(talking about Asian countries). That's because, anyone can afford to pay $3 for a cup of tall decaf cappuccino, but it cost RM15 a cup here. It's just simply not quite affordable for most if not all of our people.

If Ipoh makes good "white coffee"(we will come back to white coffee next time), then Penang is well known with their over roasted KOPI O(black coffee). You just don't get to taste this kind of burnt smell anymore, or nowadays all those shops knows how to pronounce "Arabica Bean", you know they're heavily commercialized.

Begin with a packet of coconut milk rice, we called it Nasi Lemak. Nasi means rice, Lemak means fat. Trust me, there's not much fat there, but the amount of energy produced by the coconut milk and the rice. It's like a solid piece of energy cube! The chili paste on the rice are call Sambal.

In Kuala Lumpur, Laksa is curry Laksa. In Penang, Laksa is Asam Laksa, rice noodle in sour and spicy broth. The broth is usually cooked for hours with different kind of herbs, lemon grass, chili, and fish meat. Served with rice noodle, chili slices, cucumber slices, and finally added with a spoonful of shrimp paste to make it smells like a dead fish. I don't know about you, but I enjoy this kind of mind blowing old school recipe.

If you think I'm going to end my food review after 2 dishes? Sorry no way I'm going to leave my seat! Fried flat noodle is one of the most significant dish in Penang. This, is no exception. Take a look at the shrimp being mixed fried in the noodle, they're fresh and sweet, as if exploding in your mouth and you can taste sea water from it! However, it's a little too much chili being added on the fried flat noodle. A little too spicy for me.

This is another significant dish from the Northern of Malaysia, call Duck Koichap. If I tell you, there's duck feet, pork belly, duck blood, tofu being added into the same bowl, will you still eat it? Ok, pretend like you didn't read this paragraph, but I like it. The herbs in the soup make it smells really outstanding.

What makes a great breakfast in Penang, Malaysia? My answer is, variety! Once again I would like to emphasize, there's a restaurant at every corner around the street. One Corner restaurant is the kind of restaurant that has different kind of local delights, and friendly people. And the scene is very good for the eyes as well. I don't tell lie, picture speaks a billion words. LOL (evilish laughter)
