Market Friday at Brimstone Hill Fortress, St. Kitts

in #marketfriday5 years ago (edited)

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) I hope you will join me as we share different markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see so many different markets and different cultures.

Please leave the link to your post on here so it can easily be found by others. They are so much easier to find in one place. Where else can you take such a quick trip around the globe? Thank you so much for joining us!! ❤

While visiting the island of St. Kitts, we decided to make an adventure day and go to an old British Fort called Brimstone Hill. Tag along and see if you don't have a good time! Entry fee is $10.00 - and you can pay at the door. Pictured above is the soldier quarters, down the hill from the most extensive and well-preserved British polygonal style fortification in all of the Americas.

Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park is one of the current 19 Caribbean UNESCO World Heritage sites due to the historical, architectural and cultural significance of the fortress. It is also one of the most extensive and well-preserved British polygonal style fortifications in the Western Hemisphere. Plus from its lofty perch, you can see spectacular vistas of the Caribbean Sea, five neighboring Caribbean islands (St. Barts, St. Eustatius, Saba St Martin, Nevis ) and the lush rainforest of St Kitts.source

This is a view of the Prince of Wales Bastion at Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park. It has sweeping views from the top of the hill, overlooking this entire part of the island.

The fort was abandoned by the British in 1853, and the militia disbanded in 1854. The structures gradually started to decay through vandalism and natural processes. Stabilization and restoration of the remaining structures of the fortress started in the early 1900s. In 1973, HRH Prince Charles reopened the first area to be completely restored, which was the Prince of Wales Bastion. source

We are history nuts, the whole bunch of us and this suited us just perfectly. There is a massive parking lot down at the bottom of the hill and to get to the main fort, you have to climb up a pretty steep (read 800 feet up) hill. It was fine for me, but, there were people that were huffing and I felt a little bit bad. It was started in 1690 and took about 100 years to build this fort, using slave labor from Africa. There is a film that goes over the entire history. It runs all day. I wandered around, wondering what it would have been like to live at the fort, the compound, having a store right there and all the essential items. The views were spectacular and there were many ruins around the fort that we wandered through.

High on a hill in St Kitts near Sandy Point is a historic time capsule. Stone walls of volcanic rock were fashioned and laid by African slaves using limestone from the slopes as a mortar. This was for the Brimstone Hill Fortress designed by British engineers to protect their interest against the French who despite having signed a Treaty of Partition in 1627 dividing St Kitts, mounted guns against the British in July 1689 capturing not just Fort Charles which had been designated neutral territory but the entire island. Then after reinforcement troops arrived from Britain and St Kitts was once again regained from the French, construction of the fortress with 800ft walls started in 1690 and took over 100 years to complete. Brimstone Hill Fortress is now a national park, and one of the top tourist attraction on St Kitts. source

The ticket included a map and a detailed history and placement of everything... Well I must say that you were adventurous people today and I think you for tagging along and seeing the Fort, There were so many pictures, but, I didn't want to bore you to death~

Answer: No, not clouds or the grounds. It is the letter w.

I have been to so many new places lately! I love to share and be shared with! I have always and forever liked to see different fruits and vegetables or products that are being sold. Perhaps I cannot get them here. So, yes! I would love to see yours! Don't forget to take photos wherever you happen to be shopping - whether it be the grocery store, the local marketplace or even an art gallery. Wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise. Be different if you wish! It does not have to be a traditional market! We will love it! I promise you! Don't forget to use the hashtag #MarketFriday and @dswigle.

Don't ever forget what a wonderful world we live in, people. Let's hold hands around the globe and make this earth really spin. Some days, it is not as easy to see, so we must try harder to give everyone the proper focus.

Later that night
I held an atlas in my lap
Ran my fingers across the whole world
And whispered,
"Where does it hurt?"
It answered,

"Everywhere"
"Everywhere"
"Everywhere"

"A Pot of Colored Light". (I never look, and see what the REAL answer is.) That looks like a fun fort to mess about in. All that grass and rock and nice, warm weather. Ah, paradise in a historical setting. Though I really feel for the slaves made to do the work. More than a harsh life. Can't imagine hanging out in a wool uniform in that part of the world either. "Can we wear shorts and tank tops, Captain"? Not bloody likely.
Thanks for showing us another corner of the world I've not seen before. So much to do and see, so little time and coin to get there. Hope your weekend is a grand one. Cheerio(s)

Nooo! It is the letter W!!

Because you wanted to know, right??? It really was a fun fort and there is nothing better to visit someplace and learn a little something. they had some uniforms encased in a glass display and they didn't look like the wool I am used to seeing, but, rather another lighter fabric, although heftier than cotton.

It truly was a paradise and the view from the top was amazing. You could see anyone coming for miles!

Hehe! Not bloody likely. You are such a hoot and holler!

I hope all is well in the world of DD!

Those views though! You really framed them nicely. I especially like the cannon with the island behind. Outstanding.

Ha! On the brainteaser. That's all I got to say about that lol.

Love to see the sights and thanks for taking us along.

You are welcome! It almost didn't happen. Last night, when I said I didn't have anything, it was because Steemit has eaten my post and my pictures and my words... and no, I didn't save it although I usually did. So this one doesn't have all the pictures or the words or anything, but, I lived to tell. It was probably too long anyway.

Oh, the brainteaser was lame to be sure! LOL

I think the looking down the barrel of the cannon is my favorite. It was really an interesting place with so much history behind it. Thanks for stopping by #MarketFriday!

I know you were in a whirl last night and the Old Guy bugging probably didnt help matters. I am sorry not sorry lol!!! You really did make it into a post to be proud of with such stunning and beautiful photos! You raise the bar so much higher week by week!!

I was in a whirl because I had already lost the entire post. When you saw nothing, it was because it was gone and I had to start all over.

I didn't get half of them posted but it probably would have been too long, you know. So, I guess things work out.

We got to figure out a way to prevent that from happening. Was that on Steemit or Busy? Maybe we should look at some of the others and see it there is a way to auto save drafts.

No worries. It's fine, but thank you.

WOW....What a amazing location they certainly picked the right spot no wonder it took them 100 years to build it having to climb so high all the time i wonder how many died building that monster of a fort the views are just breathtaking i would love to own my own castle on top of that hill outstanding great photos love that last photo :)

MarketFriday - initiated by @dswigle - Food Fair in Bangkok !!

ood4pf55i1.jpg

Yes!! Wouldn't a castle be a lot of fun?? I can picture it now! LOL

I sometimes wonder just how these feats can be accomplished, even with having all those slaves buildings (probably day and night) The sheer height of it would have stopped me! I didn't have any trouble climbing the hill, but, the path wasn't smooth and the steps were uneven, so I can only imagine how bad it was years ago without thoughts given to people walking up!

The view was to die for - you are right and my house would be built right up there! It was an amazing sight! Thank you for dropping the link and I am so sorry on the late reply! All things busy this weekend! What else is new?

!tip

Would be just perfect if i was a billionaire that would be the spot for me..lol :)

No worries i have been very busy myself i have friends here again and i twisted my back the other day not a good feeling have been running to my chiropractor but finally getting better in the last day or so i need to do more walking around and cut my time in front of computers...lol ...is what my chiropractor said to me :)

Ohhh! That sounds painful! How did you twist your back? I don't spend a lot of time on the computer, I am way too busy for that and my job doesn't require me sitting in front of it all day.

So, my time is limited, but, that shouldn't make me too sad, right?? Keep listening to your chiropractor!!! He knows what he is talking about and sees it every single day in his practice!

I know you worked hard, Pokey! It is out already and it's not even Sunday! That says something, doesn't it???

You know one of these Fridays I'm going to go shopping again and enter your challenge... until then I'm happy to let you handle the shopping. What did you buy me this week? Oh, and island with a fort! So cool, thank you, Denise! Lovely photos, resteemed :-)

Hehehe! I just knew it was right up your proverbial alley! Just think of all the stories that can be conjured up with that scenario?

Oh, yes!

Thanks, Keith. At 4:30 this morning, I was cursing the Gods for eating my post and I had to do it again as I didn't save it like I usually do. Oh, wait! That was 1 am... I finished posting at 4:30 But, thank you for the always kind comments and Hell-o man! That #FeatheredFriday is like a stampede now to get there!

It's expensive running challenges!

Thanks for dropping by!

!tip

OMG, was it a problem with drafts? That's horrible when you lose your work. It takes a lot of work to create posts like yours. Yes, running a challenge is expensive. I don't have the money to give tips as you do, and even voting on so many entries basically drains my account for days. Between FeatheredFriday and MountainMonday, that must account for 4 to 5 days per week of my voting.

I hear you! because I vote the post on my page and the one on the persons page, I basically give 2 votes and 2 tips per person who visits my blog. I usually end up with a lot of comments (except this week!!!) but it drains it for days and days! at least 4-5

And I spend ALL of my money on tips. ALL - so how do I grow? they do a 50//50 split but that is why even you are bigger than me. I spend it all, but, what they heck.

I posted it and it ate it. I always keep a word document, but, I had worked the night before and was still not in bed at 1 am, so I was tired. But, don't be silly, My post is no more work than yours. Are you serious? Yours are pretty amazing, don't be so modest.

And I do not think anyone really knows how expensive they are. I think that is why most people don't have them drop the link. Then you don't upvote them.

But #featheredfriday is so huge!!!!! Congratulations!

Thank you! I've been upvoting people who don't follow me, don't visit my post or vote for it, certainly don't comment as requested and don't mention my name. I should probably stop doing that. Those people generally don't participate with others who enter the challenge either - it's just using the tag as a throw-away.

If they don't do that, I don't vote them. I don't request they do anything buy drop their link. Then I have to upvote them. But, when they drop a link and don't even comment, well, hmmmm. What does that say??

wow !!!! very interesting!!! I would also go there even if the last meters I would have to crawl :))))) the views are amazing !!!! it is sad that slave labor was used to erect a fortress. that black mannequin in the barracks would have scared me :)))) it's great that this fortress was restored. Roses are great !!!! it is already very late and I don’t understand anything at all. so I will think over your riddle tomorrow :)
https://steemit.com/marketfriday/@tali72/marketfriday-shop-in-the-mall-a4c52ead91abf

Hi, Tali! @tali72 Oh, it was a long way up for some of the elderly people. But, most of them continued anyway. Slave labor was a way of life, but it hurts my heart just thinking about the fact that they still have 2nd class citizens in the world to this day. The black mannequin got a double-take from me! :)

It is being carefully restored to not make it over but keep it intact, which is much better I think.

Yes, the riddle for tomorrow! Happy International Women's Day! Thank you for dropping the link and for participating in #MarketFriday!

!tip

Hurray Hurray Hurray !!!!! I guessed your riddle !!!!! This was the second option! First, when I was little, I read a fairy tale that at the end of the rainbow a pot of gold was buried :))))) but of course I did not think that this was the right answer :))) older people are very hardy. I remember how my husband and I went up in Hungary to the castle of Dracula in Vyšehrad. it was a difficult climb for us, although we do not walk a lot on smooth streets. but I saw older people coming to meet us. they were already descending from there. it was amazing! I hope you are fine !!!!

Truth!! The older people are who surprised me, although not really. The younger ones were the complainers about the hike unless they were fitness freaks. LOL

You went to Dracula's Castle?? I actually thought it was in Transylvania in Romania, but, that could be a different one that I am thinking of. The castles are always on a hill, so they can overlook their kingdom, right?? And they are always amazing!!! Yes~!

Yay!!!! You got the riddle!!!! Good for you! I will have to think of a good one for next week!! I am doing much better! Thank you for asking.

Have a wonderful weekend!

!tip

you're right! Prince Dracula ruled in Pennsylvania. today it is both Romania and Hungary. there is a castle here and there. in a castle in Romania we have not been yet, but this castle deserves to be there. see photos from there: http://israbel.net/archives/560

I'm so glad you posted about this place. These islands are known by me from a geography game I'm playing but have never seen any photos about them. I'm really happy to see your post.
Happy International Women's Day and here's my post, I haven't forgotten :)) https://busy.org/@erikah/at-the-flower-market

Happy International Women's Day!!! Happy #MarketFriday as well! Thank you for stopping by and for dropping the link!

You are playing a geography game that mentions St. Kitts? That is so surprising, yet a very pleasant one at that. St. Kitts is only 23 miles long and 2 miles wide. (very small) It is very mountainous, but, truly beautiful. I like going there because it is about two hours by plane and no too expensive. It is also located so that you can easily island hop between other islands - also very easy.

I have lots of pictures of St. Kitts if you ever want to see them! As always, thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday! It is much appreciated that you spend the time and effort to put a post together!

Happy International Women's Day to you too dear Denise, I'm a little bit late but these few days were super busy for me.

Yes, I'm playing a game called World Geography, which is awesome! I've learned so much about the world just by playing this game. I have to know islands, mountains, populations, languages, area sizes, and so much more.

There I saw Saint Kitts and Nevis and was so happy when I saw your post 😀

I love Geography too! It was always my very favorite subject in school. Perhaps that is why I love to travel so much.

St.Kitts is so small it is a wonder you even had it in the game although it is an independent island country.

I am running so far behind this week!

Look what it says about St. Kitts among other things

image

Don't worry, I'm also begin everything, trying to catch up.

It might be that many kilometers, but, it is actually on 23 miles long and two miles wide at the widest points! LOL

It is tiny. I rented a car and they drive on the opposite side of the road, so some of the cars were banged on the left side (Americans probably drove them! LOL)

Hahaha, this is interesting and funny too :)

I know, right?
