Market Friday goes to Gettysburg: Civil War Reenactment

Market Friday IMG_3982.JPG

The Gettysburg Civil War Battle Reenactment in Gettysburg was held in July. I cannot think of a better way to make history come alive than to experience it first hand. Oh, it was so real! There was live mortars, charges with horses, and artillery shells. I bought the tickets online and headed up to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see the different markets and cultures of our friends here on Steemit. I have been pleasured by all of you, as you send in the most wonderful posts. Going places, doing things, buying merchandise. I have been surprised by many, not being familiar with the culture and I must say that it has been such an educational experience for me in so many ways and I hope for you also. This week we will be headed to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where there was a Civil War reenactment, done by living historians to educate and recreate the events of that time.

Have you ever wondered why both sides of the Civil War still fought with rows of infantrymen facing off against each other? One would think that this tactic was disproven 80-90 years previously during the Revolutionary War when the Colonists used guerrilla tactics to counter the advantages of the linear volleys the British presented.

Please leave the link to your post on here so it can easily be found by others. They will all be in one place!! Thank you! ❤

In reality, this usage “of rocks, trees, rifles, and militia” (guerrilla tactics)only worked once, at the Battle of Lexington and Concord. The British quickly adapted by maintaining their firing while charging the militiamen with bayonets before the militia was able to reload.

Market Friday IMG_2150.JPG

The fact is, that with the technology of the day, this was still the best tactics during the Civil War. With the invention of the Minié ball (the first “bullet”)and rifled barrels by Claude-Etienne Minié in 1847, the effective range of Revolutionary War muskets (50-100 yards) was expanded out to as far as 350yards. The increased range made “charging with bayonets before your enemy could reload” impossible and necessitated this force on force “concentrated fire” to attrite your enemy.

Across the hot, sun-scorched fields of Gettysburg came waves of soldiers in gray, steady and ready, making their way towards the thinning blue line of Union soldiers. One by one, they fell. - at Gettysburg Battlefield.

Market Friday IMG_2107.JPG

The only real option to this battle of attrition was for one side to wear down their enemy (and win!), for the one side (or both) to retreat or to try and out-flank your enemy. If you succeeded in flanking your enemy, you were able to fire down their line rather than perpendicular to them (like the line vs.line). When firing down their lines, it was almost impossible to miss, and your enemy can’t effectively return fire without shooting their own men who were in their way of returning fire. When a side was able to flank an enemy, that portion of the battle was basically over. The flanked side retreated as quickly as they could, surrendered or died.

Gettysburg 3.jpg

The battle involved the largest number of casualties. Up to 10,000 soldiers lost their lives, both Union and Confederate. This was considered the war’s turning point.

I always post this poem down at the bottom of my posts. It is one that has become so near and dear to my heart. I only post the most famous part of it, but, wanted to post it in its entirety today.

they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered,
"where does it hurt?"
it answered,

"everywhere"
"everywhere"
"everywhere"

Very nice post!!

Your photos really bring home how massive such a battle was. Of course the true shame is that it was American against American, sometimes relations were on opposite sides of conflict. Truly horrific! Let's hope we never see such division again, but the way both sides are so split today, who can say what the future may hold.

This is one of you epic posts in my opinion. Well done.

War is always horrific. Between the blue and the red, the division is great, but, I am pretty sure we won't be seeing battles between the two unless it is in Chambers.

I liked the reenactment as it a live history lesson and you just cannot beat it. I learned a few things there and was happy to go once again. I have been several times, so I wasn't sure if I would be bored. Not a chance!

Thank you for stopping by and saying hello, leaving your words behind. I wish you a wonderful weekend!

Oh I could see it between the have's and the have not's. Not quite today mind you, but if things keep going as they are trending, between the red and the blue states perchance. Oh yes, many are becoming more militant. Let's hope it stops here soon.

So here is the Old Man's Market Friday. Right on time milady!

I really dislike the unrest between the parties. How have we come so far apart? Well, that is an argument that will never have the right answer or an answer that makes both sides happy.

Thank you for dropping the link! Always appreciated!

Wow, this looks so funny but serious. I am only comparing those times with our time now. Even with the improvement in technology and other stuff. It looks as if things were better. Thanks so much, dear. I have really enjoyed this. Happy weekend to you dear.

I love learning about history and reenactments are an exciting way to experience it, what would I like to be?
To Play the role of a Civil war field nurse tending to the wounded and dying.

Posted using Partiko Android

They had those too! The Civil War field nurses were many times not trained as nurses but learned on the field by a doctor or other nurse.

I hadn't thought about what I would like to be, but a nurse is a great idea. Thank you for stopping by and leaving a hello! Have a great day!

So true, pictures, paintings, words
You know... but not really ....
What is that sad poem at the end?

one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

I read that bit... and it was sadddd

eveywhere

It is a poem by a woman named Warsan Shire. I credited her with it and she is from a worn-torn African country.

War is so saddddd. Indeed.

Thanks for stopping by and saying hello!

!tip

It is and even sadder when you know it still goes on in this day and age...

I do like dropping in on your posts...
If only I wasn't bound by the number of upvotes that'd be worth in :)

You sure got close to the action for your post. I have seen this on TV, but your view is much better! Loving the bare feet on the cameraman :)

Funny you mention the bare feet, it actually ties in with why that battle took place in Gettysburg.
One of the big reasons Gen. Lee went there was to acquire some thing his army desperately needed....
Shoes !!

I never heard that before and now you have driven me to look it up! Thanks for stopping in and leaving your words behind!

#MarketFriday loves you!

!tip

The battle being over shoes is a way over simplification but the quest for supplies specifically shoes played a major part to the start of the battle, forcing Lee to abandon his original battle plan and engage the Union army piecemeal that first day instead of gathering his whole army together before engaging the Union forces
This is one of the better explanations of the "Shoe" story I have found.
