Authored by congressmen Darren Soto and Ted Budd, they have been respectively dubbed the "Virtual Currency Consumer Protection Act of 2018 and the U.S. Virtual Currency Market and Regulatory Competitiveness Act of 2018.
To summarize, both are calling for studies to begin and end within the next year to better inform Congress about how best to proceed in making America safe, competitive, and enticing for parties interested in applications of cryptocurrency and blockchain around the world. They note that many such parties deliberately seek to avoid regulation and interference from the government.
The idea is that America can offer a safe haven from unstable price manipulation currently rampant in the crypto market by drafting new legislature, which will attract consumers instead of scaring them away. If all works as planned, it could put the U.S. at a global forefront of bringing crypto to the mainstream. Alternatively, it could push interest away to offshore options even more, which would thoroughly weaken America's influence in the game.
