A Geeky Dad's Movie Guide to The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019)

in #movie-review5 years ago

Back in 2014 Hollywood decided it was time to put out a two hour commercial for LEGO (yes it was that long ago). But then something odd happened. Instead of a vapid commercial, writers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller created something quite unexpected... and AWESOME! What could have been a mindless cash grab, turned out to be a clever, funny, heart-warming, and brilliant version of the Hero's Journey. Next the team hit another home run with the surprisingly hilarious The LEGO Batman Movie. Then they made a 90 minute LEGO commercial called The Lego Ninjago Movie.

Even with that last misstep, I had very high expectations for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. I have been looking forward to it for over a year. As a result, this weekend I took my wife, 14 year old son, and 11 year old daughter to see the film in a fancy Dolby Theater.

Approximately 30 minutes into the movie, I got very nervous. "Uh oh", I thought. Had the team lost its mojo? The movie was cute but it felt flat and a bit lifeless. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't bored. I just wasn't blown away. Invaders from outer space attack the post-apocalyptic world in which Emmet and his pals now live. The animation was flawless and spectacular. There were a couple of clever jokes that made me grin... but no belly laughs. The battle scenes were entertaining. Everything from the previous formula was there except for one essential ingredient... where was the heart?

I should have known not to doubt these guys. They are special. While the original movie relied on the relationship between a father and son to provide the essential heart, about half way through this one, it becomes clear that at its core, this awesome movie is about the bond between siblings. Please don't worry, you all know by now that I hate spoilers. I assure you, that isn't one. I actually think that piece of information can actually make the movie far more enjoyable.

Hmmm is it just me or does that mask look like a heart?

I had huge expectations for this movie, after those initial and temporary doubts, it exceeded every one.

Although the toys from this movie are going to be freaking awesome, it was far more than just a commercial. It had a great story, plenty of action, and spectacular animation. I was thrilled to see that all of the voice actors returned (even the small Easter egg ones like Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill). In addition, the creators managed to work in a brilliant and very funny cameo by a classic action hero.

Was this sequel as good as the first?

Of course not. Considering The LEGO Movie is one of the most flawless children's movies I have ever seen, that would have been impossible.

Is it worth seeing this one ASAP?

Absolutely!

This is especially true if you are the parent of siblings or even more importantly if you are that older or younger sibling. My kids got the message and I feel blessed that I was there to enjoy it with them.

Hi @hanshotfirst

How well I hope to see her with my two daughters.
They and I enjoyed the first part very much and I really liked that plot of father and son, my two daughters understood the message of that first film.

GRacias for the comment of this movie.
