Josephina looked down at Gary Jr. He was just like his father, smart and cute. They stood in front of the house Gary had built.
"Well, Junior, this is it." Josephina patted his head.
Gary Junior looked up at his mom. She seemed to be thinking long, lonely thoughts. He squeezed her hand and then ran to the house. On the way, he did a cartwheel, trying to cheer her up as he often did.
Josephina laughed loud and long. There's a new thing every day, she thought. A new reason to smile, and they've just got to keep on.
Josephina startled as a hand rested gently on her shoulder, then smiled when she saw him. "Hi, Gary." she said, then shook her head briefly. "I'm sorry, I mean hi, Gretchen. I guess I was distracted."
Gretchen smiled back, genuine, full. "I miss him, too. He was always the best big brother. And he would have made a terrific father. You've done an amazing job
