You work is excellent, there are areas that i think you have great strength , (were i have some considerable weakness). But I hope you don't mind if I throw a few points of criticism...
I think that you should add the nails, you work is so close to being complete and this last detail can make a big difference. And also, this might be purely my taste, but i think you might have used a little too much black or grey in the shadows... I think it dulls out the 'life' of the hands. Otherwise, I think its awesome!

No not at all, thank you :) The reasons as to why I left out certain details is because I wanted to keep my lights and darks grouped together, or simplified.

When you render or break down the forms too much in the lights, you run the risk of stopping the eye's movement around the painting. For example, if you look at any work done by Ingres or Van Dyke, you'll see that there's very little detail in the lights which groups them together and allows for the eye to move throughout the work.

And as far as the shadows, apart from me being a terrible photographer my intention was aimed towards a Baroque kind of feel. If you'll look at work done during that period you'll see most of the time their shadows were nearly black (in this instance I believe I used venetian red for the most part to keep them warm).

In addition, a great rule of thumb in which to keep in mind to catch the viewer's eye is to extend the value range as much as you can, or which is otherwise known as chiaroscuro (strong lights/strong darks) :)

Thank you for your explanation. I really appreciate that you are open to artistic discussion. I suppose i'd agree with you regarding the omitting of details for the sake of eye flow, if the painting had a lot of other more important details to look at (like in many portraits), but since your focus are the hands, then i feel that details will only enhance the eye movement.

As for the shadows, i definitely can see what you mean, you definitely have that old classical Baroque look going.

I really appreciate you taking the time to respond in so much detail.

You're quite welcome :) Oh of course! If you're not, then you've stopped learning right? ;)

With regards to rendering form, the art is to strategically render rather than to render endlessly all over. If you place too much focus in one area, you run the risk of not only breaking the forms but deadening the movement. The eye then becomes fixated on that spot.

But yeah, there are plenty of schools of thought, especially even within the classical tradition that differ, work very well, and I can still appreciate them :)

hey man, I resteemed your post, but forgot to upvote so i'm using the comment you left to give you some 'love' for the awesome art you do.

Oh no worries but thank you! I really appreciate you thinking of me :)

Nice one. In a single word just awesome. Your painting is saying many things.

Thank you! I'm always trying to say as much as I can by saying as little as possible, if that makes any sense ;)

Wonderful realistic technique!

Thank you! Nature is the best of teachers. that's for sure :)
