There’s a couple things I like here. I like the gray background color… Really makes the colors of the apples pop. I also have a curious about painting on Birch. Do you cut your own pieces? Do you seal it with Gesso?

@bdmillergallery Thank you, I really appreciate that :) I do sometimes. In this case the birch panel was already cut. And yes it was primed with an acrylic gesso. When I can, I like to use an oil ground which is my favorite. All of my painting substrates are prepared within the guidelines of the traditional classical atelier methods :)

‘Atelier’ .. I had to research this. I have no schooling when it comes to my artistic abilities so I am a bit ignorant when it comes to these terms. WOW, looking at this atelier training, it seems as though you probably put in quite some time studying under someone? I’ll have to look into this to see if they offer any such studies in my area. Thanks for the info! As well as sparking my curiosity. I use an acrylic based Gesso and paint in oils. The gesso I use is awfully gritty and is rough on the brush. I have gotten used to the way the paint blends on this rough surface though. Masonite is my substrate of choice these days.

It's an old french word which basically means "in studio practice". It pertains to the practice of teaching the old traditionally classical methods of drawing, painting and sculpture. Just like the old masters use to teach their students. Yeah, I graduated from a 4 year long intensive atelier program up in WA called The Juliette Aristides Atelier. Nowadays they have these kinds of schools all over the world.

You're quite welcome! When you're applying the gesso, you can put a little water in your batch to thin it out. The gesso shouldn't be gritty unless you want it to be. And when the gesso is dry, you can always sand it down a little. You can make it however smooth or rough you want it. Masonite is great just be sure to prime both sides to prevent warping.

Thanks!! Great advice.

You're very welcome! I'm glad to have helped :)

Simple & lovely. Poetry even in something so simple. I'll say it again: you have a real gift, as well as an obviously well-cultivated skill set.

@kayclarity Thank you, that sure does mean a lot :) I have to admit that I've had a very wise teacher. But yes, less is always more ;)

these apples and oranges are so bright and so realistic that I want to eat them:)
You talented artist.
I'll follow you. Please come to my blog occasionally:)
