After a humbling season of fires, Nature finally gave us something to smile at. It took me a while to notice. It’s been cold and rainy. But the sun finally started to break the clouds. Several of the girls in dance class mentioned encountering clouds of butterflies.

Butterflies???

The five year old in me lit up. I used to play outside collecting flowers and catching cute critters with a butterfly net. Butterflies, bumble bees, and lightning bugs.

And then a friend posted on social media a butterfly migration happening through Hawthorne and Lawndale. That’s a BIG cloud of butterflies. Reported by a guy friend who’s a punk club DJ who bleaches his hair and wears thick smokey eyeliner. The goth report got me. There’s some serious butterflying going on when the menfolk start talking of butterflies.

Here’s a tiny snippet for you. What seems like flying leaves are scores of butterflies.

This is magical for Los Angeles. It’s easy to get caught up in routines and miss migrations as we clock in and clock out of our days. The sunsets have been impressive with clouds in the sky too. Perhaps having all this rain and cold helped make this billion butterfly migration possible. If we had our normal spell of Santa Ana winds and heatwaves, the butterflies may not have thrived. Heat, fire, and wind may have compromised their population.

So this is what life is like with less harsh elements. Maybe we can take a cue from Nature.

What would thrive around us if we quieted ourselves a smidge? Go outside and enjoy the butterflies.
