Campaign Medals for Service Since 1962

Including UN, NATO, and EU Missions medals

Worn in the order of the date of participation.

They are worn before any New Zealand Special Service Medals.

The General Service Medal 1962

Instituted in 1964 to replace the Naval General Service Medal
1915 - 62 and the General Service Medal 1918 - 62.

Awarded to recognize service in minor operations for which no
separate medal was intended.

Subsequent New Zealand medals are
The New Zealand General Service Medal 1992 and
The New Zealand General Service Medal 2002.

There were 14 clasps were awarded with this medal

The Vietnam Medal

The ribbon incorporates the colours traditionally symbolic
to the three armed services, [red, white, and blue]and the
colours of Vietnam [red and yellow]

Instituted in 1968 to recognize the New Zealanders who served
in the Vietnam War.

Awarded for 1 day on land, 1 operational sortie,
28 days at sea off the coast, or 30 days cumulative visits between
29 May 1964 and 27 January 1973.[the signing of the Paris Accord]

This was the first operational medal for Australian or New Zealand
Personnel to be designed and produced in Australia.

the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal for the former Yugoslavia

Awarded to forces under NATO command or in direct
support of NATO operations in the former Yugoslavia
up to December 2002.

Replaced on 2nd December 2004 by the European Union
Forces medal.

The East Timor Medal

The colours of the ribbon are symbolic of the two countries,
Black White for New Zealand and Red and Green for Timor.

Instituted in 2001 to recognize personnel who served in East Timor
From the commencement of the New Zealand involvement in
June 1999 until 27 April 2006.

Over 5,000 medals were issued.

This medal is unique in that it was awarded to Civilians from
more than a dozen Government, Philanthropic, or
Commercial Organizations

The New Zealand General Service Medal 2002 [Solomon Islands]

The ribbon is of the main colours of the Solomon Island’s Flag

Instituted in 2002 to recognize New Zealand personnel
[Military and Civilian] who served in the Solomon Island between
June 2000 and June 2002.

This was later extended to personnel
who have served with the Regional Assistance Mission in the
Solomon Islands from 24 Jul 2003 to September 2013, and to
New Zealand Police personnel who provided support and assistance
to the Solomon Islands Government for 30 days between
6 October 2002 and 30 June 2017.

The New Zealand General Service Medal 2002 [Korea]

The light blue, and yellow were the colours of the ribbon
of the British Korean Medal awarded for service during
for the Korean War 1950 - 1953.

The light blue also alludes to the United Nations.
Red and blue are used in the flags of the Republic of Korea
and the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea.

Instituted in 2008 to recognize New Zealand Defence Force
Personnel who have served in the Republic of Korea with the
United Nations Command Military Commission or The United
Nations Honour Guard Company since 1 January 2001.

The qualifying period is 30 days.

The New Zealand General Service Medal 2002 [ Afghanistan]

The colours of the ribbon have been used in a variety of
Traditional Afghanistan flags since 1900, and in 1929 they
were recognized as the national colours of the country.

It is generally accepted that black alludes to the past,
red for the blood shed for independence, and the green for hope.

Green also represents the Islamic faith and is
regarded as a sacred colour.

The light blue represents the sea and the air service performed
by New Zealand personnel in the areas surrounding Afghanistan.

Instituted in 2002 to recognize New Zealand personnel,
both military and civilian, who served in Afghanistan
from December 2001.

There were two qualifying geographical areas for the award.
The primary operational area was within the borders of
Afghanistan itself. the secondary area includes areas of other
countries in which forces were based to participate in the operation.

There were different ribbons for the two areas.

The two medals are never worn together

The New Zealand General Service Medal 2002 [Iraq 2003]

The colours come from the colours of various Iraqi National Flags
since 1919.

Red for blood, black for oppression, and white for a
shining future, the green alludes to the Islamic faith and hope.

The black and white are also regarded as New Zealand’s national
Colours.

Instituted in 2004 to recognize personnel, both military and civilian,
who have served in Iraq since 27 May 2003.

More than 200 defence force personnel have awarded this medal.

The European Security and Defence Policy [ESDP] Service Medal

Awarded to New Zealand Defence Force personnel who
served between 2 December 2and 30 June 2007 in the
European Union Force which supported the peace agreement
Between Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Between 1996 and 2007 the NZDF provided personnel to serve
on various peace support missions in Bosnia.

Between 1996 and 2004 these missions were NATO-led,
but from 2 December 2004, the European Union took over the
Leadership.

Both the NATO and ESDP medal may be worn together.

The New Zealand General Service Medal 2002 [Timor-Leste]

The colours of the ribbon are from the National Flag of the
Democratic Republic of East Timor / Timor-Leste

Instituted in 2007 to recognize the New Zealand defence force personnel
and the New Zealand Police who served in Timor-Leste from 28 April 2006

Qualifying time was 30 days or 7 sorties.

More than 1,600 defence force and 200 police were awarded this medal.

The New Zealand General Service Medal 2002 [Counter-Piracy]

Government contribution.

Outside the Arabian Sea, other areas of operation include
Gulf of Aden, Western Indian Ocean, and off the coasts of
Somalia, Yemen and Oman.

The ribbon is NATO blue with 2 white stripes representing peace
And the silver stripe signifies that the operation was ordered in

NATO Treaty

To support general regional security operations

The Royal New Zealand Air Force Long Service and Good Conduct Medal

Instituted in 1985 to replace the Royal Air Force
Long Service and Good Conduct Medal which had been in use in
New Zealand since 1947.

Eligibility for the New Zealand award was backdated to 1 December 1977
to include personnel who had been released since that time.

Awarded to non-commissioned personnel who had completed 15 years
unblemished service.

The original RAF time was 18 years.
