Spondias dulcis is the scientific name of a fruit known as the kedondong fruit. This kedondong fruit is a tropical fruit that is hollow in fiber. This fruit is a fruit that is very easy to grow in various plots of land. These fruits have unique names according to their respective growing regions. In Sri Lanka this fruit is known as ambarella, while in the Caribbean it is known as golden apple. This fruit grows like grapes but with a larger size.

This fruit is very unique, slightly oval shaped like an egg, with a length ranging from 6-9 cm and the tree can grow up to 7 meters. This kedondong fruit is green in color with a slightly sour fruit taste and a sweet fruit heart or like mango or pineapple. This fruit was introduced and its seeds were carried around the world. But in the Western World, this fruit is not very popular.

Kedondong as a food ingredient

In Indonesia and Malaysia are the countries that grow this fruit the most as a food ingredient and also a natural food preservative. We Indonesians often use all of these plants from the stems to the fruit. Kedondong leaves are often used by the Javanese to put in spicy food, while the Aceh region often uses the leaves to remove the bitter taste in food.

The fruit, which is ripe and golden yellow in color, can be used to add a sour taste to food and is usually cooked into sweet and sour vegetables or chili paste instead of tomatoes. Meanwhile, the green kedondong fruit will have a hard and crunchy texture and is made into a salad and eaten with gongseng peanut sauce and spicy palm sugar.

Kedondong fruit stems are commonly used by farmers as natural fence wood. Usually people will cut off the stems and throw away all the leaves, after that they stick it into the ground. The stems are very good at adapting so they don't die easily let alone rot. The stem will have shoots again after 2 weeks.

Kedondong as medicine?

Another benefit of the kedondong tree is as a traditional medicine. From the past until now, my grandmother often uses young kedondong leaves as a medicine for diarrhea, mah, lowers cholesterol, lowers blood sugar. The taste of the leaves themselves is like the taste of guava leaves but this is easier to swallow.

This kedondong tree is one of the plants in my mother's yard that I planted. This is a type of kedondong graft, it will not grow as big as other kedondong trees, it only grows 2 meters tall at most, the taste of the fruit is also sweeter and tastier. The biggest fruit is only the size of a chicken egg.

We usually make this fruit as pickled fruit, boil it in sugar water and soak it and store it for up to 1 day and 1 night so that it is absorbed, after that this fruit will become the favorite fruit of the children at home. Besides that, this pickled fruit can also be used as ice lolly and eaten in the summer.

I'm ready to harvest kedondong fruit

This fruit can also be dried and used as dried vegetables in food. The most delicious part of this fruit is the heart, it tastes sweet and savory. I suggest that you try it and make it a plant in your yard, apart from its many benefits, this plant can also be used as food at home.

Until here, my first publication about the kedondong plant that I planted in my mother's yard. Hope this is useful and don't forget that farming is fun and very rewarding.
