Spring Migration 🦋

Hundreds of millions of butterflies from the Vanessa cardui 🦋 type commonly known as "The Painted Lady" is wandering, (from about the start of this week) over Israels' sky on their way to Cyprus, France, and European countries.

The researchers say this massive amount is quite unusual 🤔

This is the explanation of Dotan Rotem, the Israel Nature and Parks Authority's archaeologist:

"The millions of butterflies that we see these days are of Vanessa cardui type, a species of migratory butterfly, this time from the deserts of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait that apparently had plenty of rain and plenty of vegetation that allowed larvae to eat and drink, so basically the butterflies simply migrate our way north and west."

According to Rotem, the phenomenon does not only hit Israel.

"According to butterfly experts, they have already reached Cyprus, and from there they also spread westwards to Spain and northwards to areas that are now ripe to bloom and where they will lay their eggs."

@simba and I also encountered at least a few hundred individuals in our wandering in the Carmel Forests last week ☺️
