Checkers Little Garden

Some time ago one of your local Supermarket chain groups, Checkers, started a great initiative to educate children about caring for Mother Earth.

They launched the first “Checkers Little Garden” project in 2018 whereby you get a seedling kit with your purchase. From these kits the kids can grow their own little garden.
The demand under the children and even adults were so big that they repeated it in 2020.

image.png

Each little kit consist out of;

• A compostable pot
• A soil pod
• A tape with seeds
• A pop-out name tag

For those who don’t know a compostable pot is made from biodegradable materials which disintegrate in the ground.

The garden kit

It was a nightmare for us mom’s as the kids had to collect 8 flowers, 6 herbs and 10 vegetable kits to have the full set. Of course Checkers was not of must help as you never knew which kit you were going to get with your purchase.

image.png

When we had all the kits my stepson, Divan, wanted to start his little garden but we told him to keep it for when we move. Little did we know that he had to wait two years to grow his little garden.

The full set

Since we have moved he has been nagging me to teach him how to start growing his garden. Due to the nature of this engagement challenge there was not better time than today. Not only did I plan to teach him a few things but I need to keep him out of mischief as we had eight hours of loadshedding (power cut) today.

image.png

The right way to grow the garden is to first grow your seedling by mixing the soil pod with water making a wet mixture. You then place the seed tape in the compostable pot in a vertically position. The pot is then filled with the wet soil. What is left is to place the name tag in the pot so that you know what you are growing.

The soil pod

After a few days the seedlings will germinate, start to grow and small plants will emerge. Once big enough you can plant the plants where you want them to grow into full plants.

I was sure that we didn't had to grow the seedlings first but that we could plant the pots directly into the ground. We are now living at the coast where the soil is extremely fertile plus we had just the right place to plant the pots.

image.png

I taught Divan how to do a little experiment to test the quality of the ground.

  1. Fill a glass jar halfway with the soil where you want to do the planting
  2. Fill it ¾ with water and put the lid on
  3. Shake the jar well and leave it for a day. We left it for 6 hours

The soil started to separate and form layers.

LayersType of ground
Bottom layerSand
Middle layerSilt (mud)
Top layerclay
Good soil40% sand, 40% silt, 20% clay

We were happy that we had good soil.
Divan then placed the seed strips in the pots, mixed the soil pods with water and put the wet soil back into the pots. He then planted the pots directly into the ground and place the tags marking clearly what was planted.

How to take care of the seeds/plants

Divan as it was his project

Of importance is that the seeds must not get too much water or they will rot. As we have a sprinkling system all that Divan must do is to open the tap and run the sprinklers for a few minutes.

Once there are strong plants he will deep water the plants once a week. Deep watering is +/- 5cm and will uplift the root growth and make the plants stronger.

All that is left now is to cross fingers and to HOPE for the germination of the seeds and that we will soon have beautiful flowers, fresh herbs and healthy vegetables.

I share a heart-warming video about the Checkers Little Garden project which goes so much further than kids planting little gardens.

Hello friend interesting article, you taught your stepson how to plant the plants, it is good to instill in children the care of the ecosystem and thus preserve nature.
What a great program they implemented in your country about Mother Earth, so children learn to love the earth by playing.

Friend you missed the picture of you with the sign!

See you soon.

Thank you for your feedback! Yip I missed the selfie. The honours was not mine but his. (•ิ‿•ิ)
It will be great to see more projects like this one from Checkers all over the world. One plant can change a world.

Muy bueno que le hayas enseñado a tu hijastro como tener su propio huerto; aprovechando las semillas que pudo coleccionar hace algún tiempo.

Éxitos en el concurso.

Thank you for your visit and your reply.
We have to invest in Mother Earth and we have to invest in our children. I hope that the little seed I planted in him will grow into a beautiful plantation. (•ิ‿•ิ)

Little Divan was so impatient, what if this contest wasn't available as of now. When would you make Divan garden?

Now little divan is a Gardner with your lecture, I also have learned how to check of the soil is good soil

It is important as you have made divan realize that too much water will rot the plant but little sprinkle of water will help it grow healthy, the water can run on the plant when it grows tall and strong and during the dry time of the season

Greetings and Good luck ma'am
Great content as usual

Hahaha! Good one. No, I am sure I would have let him plant them. We are just worried that the seeds are too old but let's hold fingers and see what comes up.
It was such a lesson for him and he loved it!
All he wants to do now is to go and buy more plants tomorrow.
Kids! (•ิ‿•ิ)
Thank you for engaging. I am glad you could also learn from it.

Divan 😁, still on the mission of setting his garden, till then my hands are with you, hopefully it will germinate.

My eyes couldn't move away even for a second from your post and from the advert via the video. Checkers Little Garden is superb, I wish I can get them here.

Women Luke you will always do wonders. Growing our own food is a great honour especially around us. I live the way you featured Divan, coaching him on how to plant the seeds. I will love to get regular updates on the well being of the seed and it's progress. Good post again from you dear friend. My thumb up for you. Best of luck 🤞

They had the promo in 2018, 2020 and hopefully they will repeat it this year. It they do I will for sure keep a set for you.
Divan learned a lot today. I just have a problem.. he is already selling his vegetables for pocket money.🙈

I will for sure keep you posted on the growth of the plants.

Tomorrow is another day of 8 hours of loadshedding and I have not idea how to keep Divan busy tomorrow (•ิ‿•ิ)

Thank you for your kind words!

Hola amiga @patjewell.

Suerte amiga.🤗❤️.

Thank you my friend for reading my post and your great reply.
Yip that is what the rule says, a selfie, but I was not going to take it away from Divan even if I get penalized with a point for it.(•ิ‿•ิ)
It is worth far more than the competition.
I've taken part, I have educate and I have shared that is all that matters.
I truly hope for other Steemian who doesn't like taking selfies will do the same, share their posts.

Es verdad amiga un punto es nada, pero me alegro ver a diván sembrando y entusiasmado, tienes bonito jardín y espacio para la siembra.

Gracias por participar. Un abrazo fraterno.🤗❤️

I saw I had to give up three points so Divan will just have to make me three cups of tea (•ิ‿•ิ)
In the end it was absolutely worth it!

Buena esa idea de prepararte tres tazas de café...

Buenísimo por diván.
Saludos

Haha!

Hello @patjewell, you always put extra work in doing a perfect post. You do always have the best post.

This is s very beautiful to see you teaching Divan on how to keep a garden. Good luck in the contest

Thank you! You have warmed my heart so early in the morning. (•ิ‿•ิ)
It felt great teaching him as these days he only wants to play Xbox games.
Times are changing and if we do not take that extra minute to teach our children valuable lessons it is going to be lost forever.
Afterall, you cannot grow a garden through a blockchain.

Hello friend, it's good that your stepson knew how to wait for the moment to plant and experiment to check the quality of the land, it's great. Thanks for sharing with us.

Unfortunately he doesn't want to wait anymore. He now wants to plant more and is already selling vegetables for pocket money. (•ิ‿•ิ)
Thank you for engaging with my post. It is appreciated!

Wow, great content, we've shared and upvoted on @southernafrica

Friend, you did a great job planting these little plants. These plants are also helpful for our children. Because just spending a few minutes outside among the grass, trees and plants can improve a young person's ability to focus and concentrate. Helping with the garden, pruning the bushes, or watering the plants will help your child focus more when they return to work. Wow thats great.

Thanks for sharing this environmental activity with me and other users. Hope for your visit on about my this contest post.

Greetings 🇵🇰

Thank for reading and engaging!
We must indeed teach our children from a small age how to care for Mother Nature.
I indeed visited your post. (•ิ‿•ิ)

You are really a lovely content creator and your boy diva is a great farmer, you always bring up a more experience and technical method in all you do and that's I really admire.

You have really educated me on so many things especially when it comes to the difference between the soil and their location. Thanks for sharing such awesome content

Wishing you success.

Thank you my friend! I only saw afterwards I never shared the jar with the ground.
This is how it should look.
