Three Random Old Coinage for Fiesta Tuesday: Mexican Un Peso
I am not a coin collector, but I do love old coinage.
Today, I will feature three old coins in my stack from one of the oldest mints in the world: Mexico.
The Onza is my favorite, but this is not what I am featuring today, LOL! This one was on top of my computer desk, so I thought I'd take a quick photo and show you.
Now... about the Un Peso...
The Mexican peso is the 11th most traded currency in the world, the third most traded currency from America (after the United States dollar and Canadian dollar), and the most traded currency from Latin America.
Mexican Un Peso
1944, 1926, 1923
OBVERSE:
The Mexican coat of arms: a Mexican golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus devouring a rattlesnake. The eagle, cactus and snake are surrounded by a holm oak (encina) branch on one side and a laurel branch on the other. The head of the eagle and snake separates the purity (0.720). "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS" over the coat of arms.
Lettering: ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS, 0.720
Translation: United Mexican States
REVERSE:
Radiant cap with denomination and wreath below
Lettering: LIBERTAD, M, UN PESO, Year (1923, 1926, 1944)
Translation:Liberty, One Peso
Edge: Plain with incuse lettering
Lettering: INDEPENDENCIA Y LIBERTAD
Translation: Independence and liberty

The only Mexican coins that I have are one modern Liberdad and the coins commemorating the Mexican Olympic Games in 1968. So, I am far from being an expert...

What a cool coin and interesting info about it thanks for sharing
The México mint has been operating forever, just like the US Mint, and have produced lovely coins, and I think the appeal of their designs is the larger and “rougher” art work. The US Mint designs have always been “mire refined”... just my opinion. Their older coins also appear to be heftier because they are smaller in diameter. The modern Libertad are more like the American Silver Eagle in diameter and thickness. I might get more of these in the future. Sorry, I just woke up, I think I am a bit chatty, lol!
