The Vibrant Mineral Colors of Blue Point Spring in Blue Point Bay

in #photography6 years ago

Vibrantly colored shores of Blue Point Bay shine on the shores of Lake Mead along the Colorado River in Nevada.

I lensed these images shooting straight  down from 2,500 feet above, as I was flying and chasing a very powerful rainstorm as it passed through the area. Looking down from above this image you can see the layered topography of the shoreline.

The bright colors are the natural minerals in the rock and sand reacting to the combination of sunlight and the ground saturated with rainwater. The abundance of minerals that permeate the shores of the aptly named Blue Point Bay come from a series of hot springs west of the bay.

Rogers Spring and smaller Blue Point Spring are continuously fed by hot water springs and are true desert oases with shallow ponds, fringed by desert trees, palms and marshy vegetation. The hot springs water rises to the surface at about 100 degrees, then cools to about 90 degrees in the ponds. Overflow from the springs creates little creeks that meander toward the shore of Lake Mead, depositing the various minerals all along the shoreline.

Here is another part of the area, and if you look close enough you will see a tiny dot along the shore in the middle...that is someone in a small fishing boat.

The largest of several warm water springs along a fault line,  Rogers Spring discharges hundreds of gallons per minute, constantly  refreshing the water in the pool. Geologists think the water originates  250 miles north near Ely, part of an extensive aquifer in eastern Nevada  and western Utah. As long as there have been human inhabitants in this  area, the water bubbling to the surface at these springs attracted  visitors.

These images are from my ongoing project in which I am trying to raise awareness of the 47% of the USA and 90% of Canada that remain unpopulated wilderness.

Where Eagles Fly - The American Wilderness Expedition is my personal mission to introduce people to these amazing locations that surround us.

This looks like a painting...wow! Beautiful!

I agree! I love the seemingly random abstract nature of these images. That place is truly odd to view from above. Thanks so much for your support.

Didn't know it is that colorful taking picture from above. Thanks for sharing!

It can be remarkably intense colors from above because of numerous factors from angle of color spectrum ratio to light shift and even the fact that I shoot right after storms pass and wash everything clean of dust and dirt which really changes color dramatically! Especially so in the desert. Thanks to checking it out!

I know this in the US but it looks like I am looking 17,000 Klm from one Saturn's moons to the upper cloud deck of Saturn itself.

yep !I totally agree... I find places all the time that remind me of the surface of some distant planet. Earth is an amazing place and I am so blessed to be able to see it from this perspective!

The impression that you were flying over the surface of Mars, to get such photos.

I feel so hypnotized when i look those photos.

LOL ! Awesome.... me too

Very interesting photography thank you sharing @mannyfig1956
