A Surprise Reality About the Orca “Killer” Whale

in #blog6 years ago (edited)

Recently, I learned something new; and so noteworthy, that I’ve decided to share this knowledge with my fellow Steemians.

Did you know that the beautiful ying and yang-colored Orca Killer Whale is actually not a whale at all?

Why would someone call it so if it wasn’t really a whale? Could it have a lot to do with the fact that it looks amazingly like a whale?

It gets the name ‘Killer’ because it will eat anything to survive, including, even though rarely, humans. There are several features that shows clearly that it’s not a whale; with the most prominent being the location and size of the dorsal fin.

Now, to share the most interesting tidbit, and the reason for this post: I learned that the Orca Killer Whale, beautiful creature that it is, is actually a member of the DOLPHIN family.

Surprise! It’s not a whale, but a d-o-l-p-h-i-n, dolphin! Of course, many of you knew this. But, I've always taken it at name-value, never questioning. If you have a youngster in your life with an interest in aquatic animals, this would be a great tip to pass on. Of course, they probably already know this!
