Steem Basic Income

Steem Basic Income is a voluntary social experiment to bring a crowdfunded basic income to as many Steemians as possible. Members join by sponsoring others into the program. Steem Basic Income is delivered through providing regular upvotes to member content.

HF21 Update

We are still experiencing some recurring API issues after the fork, but upvotes are now going out again. We will be closely monitoring the impact of CLRC and downvote pools to determine whether any unanticipated impact requires program changes.

How has your experience been? Posting fine? Commenting? Up/downvoting? Do you dare to downvote? Have you been targeted? Let us know in the comments section.

SBI Word Clouds

In the early days of Steem Basic Income, more than a year ago, we used to share our word cloud sometimes. The last time we shared our updated word cloud was one week ago.

'SP' and 'mvests'

Steem Basic Income is a stake-based service. When you sponsor others, your build their stake and your own, and then you receive regular upvote support based on that stake (or based on your delegated stake or stake-powered upvotes).

Staying stake-based keeps us sustainable.

'Contest' and 'Prizes'

Not everyone has the means to subscribe to a lot of support from our stake-based system, but our 'sponsor to enroll' requirement has provided great incentives!! People integrate SBI into both new and existing contests, use it to power growth in new programs, and to support other Steemians that need a little extra help.

Member Heroes

My favorite word in our word cloud is 'member'! The SBI member is the real hero. We built a framework that allows you to help yourself by helping others, and you have responded en masse. Over 96% of the accounts that we have upvoted in the last month were sponsored for support by another account at least once, and over 42% have sponsored somebody for support at least once.

Give yourself a pat on the back and then thank another SBI member today!

Enrollment

If you want to get involved, or to increase the basic income that you receive, enrollment is pretty straightforward:

Just send 1 STEEM to @steembasicincome. Include the name of a Steemian to sponsor in the transaction memo (preceded by @). You and the person you sponsor will each receive 1 unit in the program. You can sponsor any active Steemian, it does not have to be a current member.

If you're unclear, please check out our full transaction memo guidelines and then let us know if you have any questions.
https://steemit.com/busy/@steembasicincome/transaction-memo-guidelines

The official currency for enrollment is STEEM. If we choose to accept SBD without refunding it, you do not receive extra value for it. Enrollments are processed automatically every 144 minutes.

With the curation rewards after HF21, is the SBI model changing in any way?

We will automatically adapt to 50/50 by increasing the total rshares delivered to each member: https://steempeak.com/hf21/@steembasicincome/sbi-in-an-hf21-world-part-1-50-50-rewards

Since the impact of CLRC and downvote pools will be different for every single member, depending on where they are on the curve, we are not making any additional changes until we have more information about the emergent equilibrium. https://busy.org/@steembasicincome/sbi-in-an-hf21-world-part-2-convergent-linear-and-downvote-pools

Having SBI support will still help you be higher up the curve than you would be without it.

I love Basic Income concept... thanks for what you are doing, guys!

When will the upvoting resume? I haven’t receive an upvote for my last two posting.
Just wanted to ask, thank you.

Hopefully in the next few hours unless there was a bug in our upgrade that we can't detect until after replay is completed.

I think people forget that it doesn't take a big donation to help someone, just a lot of little donations. [Hannah Teter]

Hey @steembasicincome just to let you know that your upvote did not go out for a post for me posted over 24 hours ago. Maybe there is still something not working?

There was an issue with node replay and it started again. We have resolved that and catch-up votes are going out now.

Remember that only delivered rshares value is removed from your pending upvote balance, so even if some posts still get missed the pending rshares will be delivered on future posts.

Thank you!!! :)

Hey guys, been a few hours since my post, didn't see any votes come in from SBI. Just letting you know per your instructions above :)

Thanks. We found that some API changes were resulting in votes delivered not being deducted from member pending vote balances. Since that creates a value leak, we paused voting until Beem can be upgraded.

Same here.

Based on early indications, it seems that the SBI service will be even more important now with the lower payouts being seen on smaller accounts. Look forward to seeing how the community moves forward with this.

Thanks, that was part of our overall conclusion too.

While our members are mostly at the low end of the curve and hurt by CLRC instead of helped by it, a growing SBI support base makes an even bigger impact now than it did before.

Downvoting is bad in general, unless it's used to knock out spam and abuse, other than that if you disagree in opinion with someone else just vice your opinion and people can vote who they agree with.
Also, the new split of earnings between authors and curators, I see it's not fair to pay 'Likers' equally to those who work to produce proper contents. Just compare the work behind making a post and that fit curating it, you should know better with all the hard work you've doing in programming and updating us with the results.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. Downvoting is an important part of reaching rewards consensus. Especially with the convergent rewards curve in place, it's time to stop thinking about votes as delivering 'value' but instead of being a vote for that post to receive value.

An upvote says "I think this post is more valuable than shown" while a downvote says "I think this post is less valuable than shown."
There is also an idea around curating accounts instead of posts, which is how SBI works. Sponsoring somebody says "I think this account should consistently receive more value".

The reasons why somebody is downvoted vary by the downvoter, but I generally agree downvoting based disagreement with what is said creates a very problematic environment. Should the value of somebody's work be tied to their 'right-think'? I don't believe so.

One think I just thought of is that after the fork there is very little incentive to engage your commentors with votes. I imagine give a share of SBI to your followers who engage would be more profitable for everyone.

I have always upvoted comments on my posts and now only half of what I upvote shows. What happens to the rest?

good question and I'm not sure of the exact breakdown. I'm going to accumulate beer token and give them out instead

When you cast an upvote, you are delivering a certain amount of 'votes for reward' or 'rshares' to that post. During the period of HF19 and HF20, their conversion value to SP/STEEM/SBD at time of payout was relatively consistent relative to stake (what is referred to as linear rewards curve).

Now instead of the value relationship between vote points and reward being linear, it follows a quadratic curve that is being referred to as convergent linear rewards curve or CLRC. You need to stop thinking about your upvotes having a fixed value. Your are delivering vote points and their value is based on the total distribution of vote points throughout the blockchain.

The greater the total rshares delivered to a piece of content, the more favorable their conversion ratio into SP/STEEM/SBD at payout. The various dapps show an estimated payout value based on the current state of pending content, but it can change a lot more between vote and payout than previously.

In particular, each additional vote increases the rshares on something and improves its total payout favorability. In effect, each additional vote increases the pending value of all votes already on the content. This will not always be apparent when you vote, because many other votes may have gone out to other content elsewhere at the same time, and the ratios are based on relative totals.

This is also why many have been specifically targeting trending content with their downvote pools.
