The purpose of this component is to simply allow us to increase the graphics power of our PC by equipping it with a GeForce GTX 1080 GPU, which is currently one of the most powerful gaming graphics processors on the market. However, the computer to which we connect the AORUS GTX 1080 Gaming Box must have at least one Thunderbolt 3 port. And Windows 8 or 10.
The finish of this eGPU is cared for both inside and out. The chassis is all-metal and lacks plastic components, reflecting that Gigabyte has treated it as the high-end product it is. Once the panel protecting the delicate electronic components from static electricity has been removed, we can check that the size of the chassis fits like a glove to the dimensions of the printed circuit board of the graphics card.
The cooling system that prevents the graphics processor from reaching its maximum temperature threshold has the features you would expect from a high-end graphics card: a fan with a respectable diameter, and therefore capable of displacing a significant flow of air; a generously sized aluminium heatsink; and ducts that help transport heat away from critical areas made of copper, a material that stands out for its higher heat conductivity index than aluminium.
Without a doubt, the most significant disadvantage to be overcome by this product is its price, which is significantly higher than the already high cost of a graphics card equipped with a GeForce GTX 1080 GPU. The latter are usually around 600 euros, but the price of the AORUS GTX 1080 varies between 800 and 1,000 euros depending on the store we are going to. And this cost puts it out of the reach of many gaming enthusiasts. However, if we like to play, we already have a Thunderbolt 3 computer with a Thunderbolt 3 connection via USB-C port and its price fits our budget, there is no doubt that it is an interesting proposal.
