Firemen at work

While out on a walk last weekend I saw these firemen working , Oops is that not politically correct I guess I should have said firefighter these days but they were all men in this case.

Now this may seem a strange place for Firefighters to be working and spraying witht he hose, but let me show you where they were spraying and why.
Firstly with the why, Under the spray of water you may notice some yellow things in the water, Those are little rubber ducks, and the Firefighters were helping with the spray to get them out of the rocks where they had got stuck.
Now you may ask why there are little yellow Rubber Ducks in the river, well they are part of an event held here in Milford called the Duck Race, for many years it was run by a local school to raise money, but when the school closed the event stopped for a few years, and restarted last year ran by the United Way of Milford and the Woodruff Family YMCA as a fun family event and a fundraiser.
The Fun part os all the people going there to watch the race, and the Fund Raising is through people can buy a duck ( well they do not get the actual duck just the number on it) and prizes are donated and given to the first os many ducks that win the race.
The ducks are dropped from a truck off the bridge and float on down the river.
I missed the actual duck race but I saw the cleanup going on including these firefighters spraying as I show here.

Some not only stayed for the Duck Race itself but also seemed to be enjoying watching the firefighters using the hose to wash out the ducks downriver where they could all be collected, which the next shot shows.

And I guess this post would not be complete without showing the ducks being collected, you can see in the next shot the rubber ducks which have been collected onto a canoe, and they are loaded into buckets which they pull up onto the bridge to take away ready for the next years event

Dramatic Duck Race aftermath! What a fun post.

I haven't heard of a Duck Race in years. There used to be one in the Spokane River (Spokane, WA) that had some monstrous prizes. Rumor has it that there may have been a 'calcutta event' with it. I wouldn't know about that as that form of gambling is illegal in Washington State :)

Thanks for posting a great charity event.

I am a little annoyed with myself I did not catch the race this year, and probably by this time next year I will have moved, but ohh well such is life ;)
The prizes here are fairly good but not huge or they weren't in the past I do not know about this years event

That seems like a really cool event. That is also a very inventive way of getting the ducks to move along to their final destination!

It is such a fun event kind of annoyed I missed it this year and only saw the cleanup, it was a cool idea using the firehose to get them off the rocks, in previous years when it was run by the school there used be a bunch of people on kayaks paddling all over to get all the ducks out this was a more effective way and made for some cool shots

So, that's how they get all the little yellow duckies back in the nest. I wondered if they worked their way into the big rivers and then the ocean. Now I know...thanks.

I am glad they catch them all, there is far to much man made waste in the oceans already

Lol. What a strange little event.

It is quite unique and always fun kind of sad i missed it this year
