Israeli Elections 2019 - The Good, The Bad and The Despair of It All

in #israel5 years ago

The parliamentary elections are taking place in Israel today. It seems like only yesterday I got drunk with a friend while watching the results, knowing my country is yet again doomed to be ruled by a war-mongering-douche. Do I believe this time will be different? Not really.

The Selection for The Election

As always, the number of parties running was unreasonable, and they vary being populist and downright ridiculous. With two parties dropping out of the race today, the number is still far too high.

If you're curious about the politics and what it means, you should check out the post by my dearest @mrlightning trying to explain it, somehow. Me? I have gotten used to rolling my eyes and accepting my destiny - shitty government for another four years.

The Good - Day Off

That's about the only positive thing I can say about today - people got a day off work. Sure, it's costing the economy millions, but I can smell my neighbors' BBQ and have no doubt the tourist attractions country-wide are packed with families celebrating democracy by getting a (slight) heatstroke in the sun.

The Bad - Pirates?

I find it most upsetting that only today did I discover the existence of an Israeli Pirate Party. Sure, there's not a chance in the world they're getting into the parliament even if the party selection was smaller, but hey - PIRATES! I kinda wish I heard about them sooner so I could join the list. Just so I could say I ran for government.

Also, their party name is a play on words in Hebrew, basically telling people that voting for them is equal to taking a shitty at the ballot. I love it.

The Downright Depressing

Politics depresses me. One of the main reasons I have for voting is the fact it then allows me to complain for the next four years (or less) about how shitty the elected government is since I had some (minimal) say in them being there. I did what I could to make a difference.

Sort:

Apparently turnout is particularly low this year.

Because at some point people stop believing empty promises and lies and, well, give up on it all.

Time for a change...

Its election time here in India too.

Have you considered running? Or at least actively supporting a candidate's campaign whose values better align with your own?

I have chronic fatigue and zero interest in politics. So no.
