Google announces that all smartphones with Android Nougat 7.0 and above can now become a security key. The method is launched in beta mode, after being tested by internal employees.

The principle is to use the encrypted security key built into the Android phone and use it as a second authentication to access an online site or service. For now, only Google G Suite, Gmail, Google Cloud and your Google Account are affected. They will be joined by others in the coming months.

What does this entail

The smartphone can also be used as a security key on a tablet or computer. But for that, it is necessary that the terminals have Bluetooth and that they have the last version of their OS (Chrome OS, Windows 10, macOS). The smartphone must also remain nearby so that you can connect to the Chrome browser wirelessly.

The context

Two-factor authentication helps secure your connections and prevent hackers from recovering and usurping your credentials and passwords. The method used here by Google is safer and more sophisticated than that using SMS or push notifications.
