Live In Nanny

When I was a young teenager I wanted spending money, mostly to buy new clothes. I used to get an allowance until I lost the key to the bread-truck-turned-camper. That was when I was around 11 or 12 years old. I made extra money selling off a whole collection of comic books which I wish I'd have kept because now they'd be worth a good bit. I had Casper, Superman, the Archie's and many more.

Once I turned 14 I answered an advertisement for a live in nanny for the summer. I was dropped off at a trailer park a half hour from home. My employers were Pepper and Rocky (no lie). I don't remember what they did for jobs, but I watched all five of the kids during the day. The youngest was around five, the oldest nine or ten.

I loved my freedom from home and dove into the responsibility. I cleaned, cooked and ran a tight ship. The neighbors praised me for keeping the kids in line and said I was the perfect nanny. I had experience with caring for my sister who was ten years younger than me. I put on a Simon & Garfunkel album and went to town cleaning and cooking in their trailer. During that time, I met a boy and we would walk around the park together. I felt so grown up. It didn't last long because I had to sleep in the same bed my employers vacated and Dad and Mom didn't like that, even though Pepper and Rocky worked nights and slept days.

I look back fondly on that stint of nannying. I learned I was capable of a lot of responsibility and handled it well and I experienced a taste of what adults had with my freedom to play mom figure.
