And part 2 The Runner

Carrie twisted the hospital door knob and stepped into the brightly lit corridor. Florescent lights flickered above her casting an odd glow on nurses and doctors passing each other with bulging files grasped in their hands.

"Miss Ramsay?" the tall officer queried, "I'm Sergeant Martin and this is Officer Peterson." A thin, pock-marked officer with short black hair nodded to Carrie.

"I am here to ask a few questions in response to the wounds that David has received. Can you please come with us?"

Carrie felt hot beneath the light hoodie she threw on to leave the house despite the chill inside the hospital.

Carrie nodded to the Sargent and followed the men down to a small room down the hall.

"How is your boyfriend?" he opens the conversation with. His eyes seem concerned but his voice is professional.

"David seems to be stable now," she responds in relief.

"We feel that this may be a serious threat to David and yourself and are seeking any information you may have on his injuries."

Carrie looks from one officer to the other, holding her expression neutral.

"David doesn't remember what happened, Sargent. I don't know who would do this to him!"

The officer named Peterson looks at her with piercing eyes. Inwardly she blanches
is this one of them?

The clock on the wall ticks the seconds with an electric whir. She's disconcerted.

"When did David leave the house, Miss Ramsey" Sargent Martin probes.

"Around 5:00 in the afternoon."

"Where was he going?"

"He was going to pick up dinner and some odds and ends, that's all."

"When did he come back?"

"It was around 7:30, I think. He was badly cut and loosing a lot of blood from the injury. I panicked and wanted to call an ambulance, but he was afraid and told me not to call. I put a tourniquet on his arm and convinced him I'd drive him to the emergency room."

"That's a long grocery run. Did he call while he was out?"

"No, but David talks to everyone and it's common for him to get caught up in conversations. He makes friends and connections everywhere we go."

"Did you call him?" Peterson asks.

numerous times, she thought, but slowly shook her head in bewilderment.

"I was cleaning the kitchen and doing laundry."

Officer Peterson shifted his weight on one foot. His gun on one hip flashed, reflecting the light from above his head.

"Miss Ramsay, we're here to help David. This type of attack is not something we take lightly. You and David could become targets."

"Targets? Who would want to harm us?" her voice rising.

"We aren't sure, but any information could help us find who attacked David."

"I don't know...we don't have any enemies, sir."

"David must have someone who is seeking to hurt him seriously. Apparently killing him was not out of the question."

Carrie looked from Sergeant Martin to Officer Peterson and whispered, "I don't want anyone to hurt him again. I wish I knew who did this."

"Once the doctor releases him to talk, we will be asking him for his statement, Miss Ramsay. It's concerning to us that he refused an ambulance."

"He just was in shock, sir. I don't know why he refused. I'll talk to him and see if he will tell me more when he wakes up."

Sergeant Martin pulled a card from his front uniform pocket and handed her the card.

"Call me as soon as you get anything, day or night."

Sergeant Martin holds the door open and Carrie escapes the room as Officer Peterson studies her departing form.

Hmmm. Are they good, are they bad? What did David get himself into...

Seems David is in over his head, doesn't it? Thanks for reading and commenting as well as the prompt!
