Escaping Fort Delaware

in #ulog5 years ago

Fort Delaware is an old, awesome, stone fort build for the US Army in the mid 19th century, and located on "Pea Patch Island" in the middle of the Delaware River near Delaware City. It, along with nearby Fort Mott in New Jersey and Fort DuPont in Delaware City, were designed as part of a 'coastal defence' system to defend primarily Philadelphia by making the river impassable to enemies.

Fort Delaware as seen from Delaware City:

Today the Fort is a Delaware State Park, interpretational centre, and living history museum. Tonight the Fort was turned into a large "escape room" with the homage "Escape Fort Delaware."

To begin, we were looking at standard 'escape room' fare: we were on the island and had to find clues to earn an escape. However, clues were obtained by interacting with the fort's inhabitants (various "Privates" and "Sargeants" and a "Captain") and by completing scavenger hunts and solving puzzles to help them and get more information. Each team was provided, at the beginning of the night, three "dollars" which could be used to bribe any of the inhabitants for a clue.

The "Captain" of the fort:

One of the tasks involved performing an inventory of all the guns (cannons) and artillery (cannonballs) for the fort. Another involved couriering information from place to place. All in all, it was pretty neat.

A stack of cannonballs, which we had to inventory. There were a total of 157 cannonballs.

tl;dr: we escaped with 12 minutes to spare. All clues found, puzzles solved, and steps walked. And there was a lot of walking!

We finally made it back to the shore, congratulated our two new friends who joined us as a group of four, and went to DQ for ice cream.

It was a lot of fun. It was long! Two hours of pretty much straight walking and puzzle solving. If you've never had the opportunity to do an escape room, and you get one, I highly encourage it. Too much fun! The fort has 'ghost hunting' tours in October that I might look into next.

Oh this sounds fun!!!
There's an escape room about an hour from us and I would love to try this one day!

You should! They are just too much fun.

very cool look at some history.
I enjoyed the images and photos.

Thanks for presenting on #pypt @pypt

Thank you! It was definitely a lot of fun.

Wow! Looks like a great idea for a fundraiser and it seems that you "escapees" enjoyed your time and your ice creams there.

I wonder if somebody could loan me the Alcatraz island so that we can hold a similar fundraiser there for Papillon? Lol

Blessings!

Now alcatraz would be cool! I can only imagine the fun that could be had there.

Hahaha, I don't think that anyone would ever get Alcatraz for a project my friend. Too much dirty history there.
Maybe the government should think about it, as something good can help to clean it's sad history.

We had a terrible drug den down the road at the old place and it ran under a nightclub banner. Almost every night the cops were called out to restore the order there.
Then suddenly it was closed down and a church converted the place into a sundayschool.
What a dramatic change took place.
Blessings!

Thank you very much!

Very cool sir wwwiebe and that ghost hunting tour would be great too! That fort is still there in original condition?

It's very close! There are parts of the fort that are in need of repair and so are closed to the public, and the POW barracks outside the fort had all been destroyed (there is one which is not original, but was built to specifications from a surviving blue print). Still a cool place!

Very interesting sir wwwiebe! And those games are held all over so you will be finding another one? Can the kids come?

yeah it's fun experiencing like this that you can only see it through movie. What a nice experience you have,

Oh. it is a giant escape room? Looks so fun:)

Yes, exactly! And it was across the entire fort. We walked, and walked, and walked... and then went for ice cream afterward. A great way to end the day!

This seems like it could be something they'd do for Halloween, but they have something else going on in October, so it must not be for Halloween.

The escape room was just a fundraiser. In October they'll be hosting ghost tours and ghost investigations. I haven't gone to one of those yet. If I can schedule it this year I just might. The fort is a really neat place for such things.
