AAA Review - Aquaman - DC Blockbuster of 2018

Aquaman first appeared in DC Justice League back in 2017 as a supporting Superhero alongside Superman, Batman, Wonderwoman and others. This time, he is having the first solo film and it proved to be a huge box office success, earning more than a billion dollars from tickets.

Quick Plot

Arthur (played by Jason Momoa) is the child of Queen Atlantis Atlanna (Nicole Kidman) and a human man when she seeked refuge by escaping to the surface. Needing to return to the sea to keep her family safe, Atlanna left behind her son and was punished with to the deep Trench.

Most of the story afterwards took place after the Steppenwolf's invasion in Justice League. Arthur is already a grown man with the power and strength of a skilled warrior. He involved himself in protecting the ocean and the people living in the area against pirates, who were actually recruited by the King of Atlantis' Orm, Arthur's half brother.

The story quickly moves to a battle between Orm's trying to unite the different sea nations to wage war against land humans, and Arthur's to stop him.

Arthur eventually earn an alliance with the huge deep sea create Karathen and proved his worth to claim the legendary Trident, thus granting him control over all the seas and become the true king of Atlantis. In the process, Arthur also managed to save his mother Atlanna, who he thought was dead years ago.

The King Arthur moves on to stop Orm waging war with land human. Upon learning his claiming of the Trident, Orm was admits defeat and acknowledge Arthur as the King.

Reviews

Established action director James Wan made a stellar performance in portraying the mythical underwater world of Atlantis with extensive use of CGI. The fighting scenes were elaborate with fast paced action typical of a DC superhero movie. Despite having a weak script to work on, the director still managed to put in a great display of aquarium spectacle.

What I didn't like was the tone of the movie. The use of small jokes throughout the movie is becoming a standard amongst most Marvel superheroes nowadays, and it seems like DC is trying to copy that. The cheesy costumes worn by the Atlantis were also too much to bear, reminds me of Chinese dramas.

Overall, DC Aquaman is still a solo superhero movie that is as good as any of Marvel's. The box office success proved that.
