"한을 다치지 않기 위해서지요." 그렇게 송화는 평생을 기다려온 동생 동호을 떠나 보냅니다.
고 이청준 작가의 연작소설 '남도소리'에 실린 단편중 하나입니다. 호남 우도 지역, 광주, 나주, 보성, 고창 등 호남의 서남부에서 발달한 판소리 유파의 하나인 서편제를 중심으로 예술과 삶에 대한 작가의 중심사상이 한국적인 정서로 너무 잘 묘사되어져 있는 수작입니다.
씩씩하고 남성적인 동편제와 달리 섬세하고 풍부한 리듬과 감성을 지닌 서편제는 섬세한 묘사와 지적인 문체를 지닌 작가의 손에 의해 한스러운 정한을 고스란히 품은 소설로 다시 생명력을 얻게 됩니다. 그리고 영화로 다시 태어나게 됩니다.
"사는 것은 한을 쌓는 것이고, 한을 쌓는 것이 살아가는 것."이라는 소설속의 대사처럼 영화는 소리꾼들의 예술혼을 아름다운 한국의 풍경과 함께 한편의 그림처럼 수놓고 있습니다.
개봉 당시 한국 영화 최초로 단편 영화관에서 100만이라는 흥행 기록을 세우게 됩니다. 지금처럼 멀티 플렉스 영화관이 아니었다는 사실을 인정한다면 정말 어마어마한 기록입니다.
소설이 지닌 한스러운 정서는 영화에 고스란히 옮겨져 있습니다. 가장 한국적인 정서를 담아내는 임권택 감독은 소설의 주요 장면장면을 그만의 영화적인 문법으로 풀어냈습니다.
예술가는 예술을 위해 어디까지 할 수 있는 걸까요. 편집광처럼 소리에 집착하는 아버지의 모습은 딸 송화에게 그대로 유전되어지고 송화는 소리를 위해 그토록 기다려온 동생을 만났을 때도 아무 말 없이 동생을 떠나보내고 한을 지켜내게 됩니다.
아버지의 엄격한 성격과 지긋지긋한 가난이 싫어 어린 시절 가족을 떠나게 된 동호. 그의 시선을 따라 흘러가는 영화는 한국 근현대사와 맞물리며 예술가들의 삶의 여정을 조심스럽게 들춰냅니다.
임권택 감독은 명작 '만다라'의 첫장면에서 볼 수 있듯이 주요 장면에서는 설명을 하지 않고 롱테이크로 그저 보여주는 기법을 자주 사용합니다. 서편제 역시 마찬가지입니다. 영화의 백미인 길다랗게 늘어서 있는 길을 따라서 진도 아리랑을 부르는 장면은 한국영화사에 길이 남을 명장면으로 지금까지도 회자되고 있습니다.
소설을 영화로 옮기는 일은 결코 쉬운 일이 아닐 겁니다. 문자가 지닌 상상력을 이미지는 절대 모두 담아낼 수 없기 때문입니다. 하지만 가끔은 문자와 영상이 거의 일치가 되는 경우가 있습니다. 서편제는 그런 영화중에 하나입니다. 거장은 그렇게 거장을 담아냈습니다.
31회 대종상 작품상 및 6개 부분 수상, 14회 청룡영화제 작품상 및 6개 부분 수상, 13회 영평상 작품상 및 6개 부분 수상 및 그 외의 다수의 수상기록을 지닌 영화입니다.
개봉 당시 한국 사회에 커다란 파문과 동시에 사회 현상을 일으켰던 영화입니다. 어쩌면 그만큼 이런 영화를 기다려온지도 모르겠습니다. 서편제 만나보세요.
