에로스와 크로테스크, 고 박경리 작가가 일본문화를 정의한 용어입니다. 대륙과 떨어져 독자적으로 자기만의 고유한 문화를 형성한 일본은 전세계 그 어느 곳에서도 볼 수 없는 독특한 문화를 만들어 냈습니다. 한자문화의 영양권하에 있었지만 중국에도 한국에도 없는 오리지낼러티를 지녔습니다.

"나는 인간을 싫어한다." 공각 기동대를 만든 오시이 마모루 감독의 인생관이자 영화관입니다. 허무와 우울로 가득한 작품세계는 일본 문화 특유의 에로틱하고 그로테스크한 전통과 융합되면서 몽환적이고 환상적인 이미지 세계를 만들어 냈습니다.

초고속 네트워크 미래 사회를 배경으로 국제적인 범죄 조직인 인형사를 제거하기 위해 활약하는 비공식 사이버그 조직 공안 9과 공각기동대의 이야기를 담고 있는 이 작품은 오늘날에도 애니메이션의 고전으로 평가받고 있는 몇 안되는 명작입니다.

극사실주의에 가까운 사실적인 묘사, 살아서 움직이는 듯한 캐릭터, 긴장감이 넘치는 스토리 전개, 고독과 허무로 가득한 이미지 톤, 상흔을 감싸는 기계음, 그리고 무엇보다 영혼없이 떠도는 메인 캐릭터의 멍한 표정이 암울한 미래사회의 단면을 수놓습니다.

공각기동대는 헐리우드 실사 영화에도 많은 영향을 끼쳤습니다. 무엇보다 전세계인들에게 큰 사랑을 받았던 매트릭스 시리즈는 공각기동대가 없었다면 제작될 수 없었을 거라는 말이 있습니다. 많은 장면들이 공각기동대의 명장면을 경의에 가득찬 시선으로 오마주했기 때문입니다.

오시이 마모루 감독은 이 작품의 배경이 되었던 홍콩을 무려 50번 이상 방문을 했다고 합니다. 미래 사회의 모습을 가장 사실적으로 묘사해 내기 위해 홍콩을 택했고 도시의 후미진 구석구석을 모두 샅샅히 살피고 난 후 작업에 임했다고 합니다.

이미 영원히 잊혀지지 않는 이월가치를 지녔습니다. 작품은 예술을 넘어 유물이 되고 시간과는 상관없는 영원한 가치를 지니게 되었습니다. 전세계인들의 가슴속에 애니메이션의 영원한 고전으로 자리잡고 있는 작품입니다.

인간의 본질을 꿰뚫는 미래 사회의 대서사시, 공각기동대가 잊을 수 없는 황홀한 미감의 세계로 안내합니다.
