Since 1968, Mobil Oil has a production sharing contract with Pertamina to search for oil sources from Earth's stomach both onshore and offshore. In 1969, Mobil Oil began to deploy its search in Aceh with a primary focus in North Aceh. Drilling conducted near the village of Arun is the fifteenth time performed by Mobil Oil. Since the first search in a location indicating an energy source to the point of fourteen drilling in a new unfamiliar field, the company has discovered oil and gas with too high carbon dioxide content that is difficult to develop.

The oil company Standard Oil Company of New York that once operated in Sumatra has detected that in Aceh there is a large amount of gas. On that basis, the search by Mobil Oil coordinated by Pertamina Unit I was concentrated in the village of Arun. Arun Village is a village in Kecamatan Syamtalira, Aceh Utara, whose name is later used as the name of this natural gas company.
