Turtle bugs, beetles that can hide the head like a turtle

in #acehmacro6 years ago

Scientists claim they have discovered a species of ladybug beetle that is able to hide its head. The ability is like the tortoise, making these insects seem to have no head.

Quoted from Live Science on Friday (10/26/2012), Ross Winton, a former insect science student at Montana State University found the chef's beetle in a trap he installed on a sand dune, southeast of Montana.

Initially, Winton mistook the insect as part of an ant or a beetle that lost its head. But after further research, he discovered that the little insect was a koksi beetle that was hiding his head.

This small species is known only from two tails, one male and one female. Because of this, the insects are qualified to be the rarest species in the United States, "said an entomologist at Montana State University and former Winton coach, Michael Ivie.

"This species is very unusual because of its small size, unique habitat and scarcity, but the fact that the beetle hides its head into the neck makes its biology a mystery."
