A Research Study Afternoon - My Actifit Report Card: July 11 2019

in #actifit5 years ago (edited)

For activity today @crypt-skip and I walked this morning before it got really hot. I stopped at Lincoln Park in front of the fountain to do my #seven77 pushup video. At least it sounded a little cooler there with the water cascading down the fountain. You can see the video on Twitter here.

This afternoon I drove to St. Louis to participate as a volunteer in a research study for Washington University. The study, named SEABIRD, was to validate their research for a new blood test that will be used to identify a substance in the blood called Amyloid that can indicate a precursor to dementia (Alzheimer disease). This will be a valuable diagnostic tool because the only two ways in use now to find Amyloid before the actual onset of the disease is an MRI (very expensive) or a lumbar spinal tap. Neither are optimal for diagnostic purposes. This test under research will be a simple blood test. It should be a very useful tool. My participation today involved them drawing my blood and I was given the oral test that is administered to potential dementia patients. It involved reading, following oral instructions, making some drawings, and some memory work. It also involved about an hour of having the study and all my rights explained and signing a ton of paperwork, lol. Gotta love all the red tape.

Alzheimer's is a very debilitating disease and I hope that this blood test is validated and becomes available in the near future.

I like that about you, always considering others. I wish that the outcome will be very helpful and that the knowledge will reach all parts of the world very fast. MRI scan here is like something for the very rich, it's not even a cure, just to investigate. That alone make people run from it and patronize all sorts of quackery stuff that leads people to their early grave.

Great stepping 💪 and glad to learn about that new blood test. It was very good of you to get involved and I really hope that it will be successful.
Speaking of Alzheimer's, I heard being on a ketogenic diet and including coconut oil in the diet goes a long way in preventing it. Apparently, the brain works better on ketones than glucose for energy.
Wishing you an amazing high five Friday ahead 🎉. Enjoy your activities including the seven77 👍 😁

Sounds like an amazing afternoon, better medical technologies are always appreciated, and it's even better when you can participate in making them better!

Let's hope for the best!

I have a good friend in dementia treatment and it is a noble cause. Hopefully some relief can be discovered for older folk!

Nice count @blueeyes8960, and really great of you to do those tests, have an awesome weekend ahead.

Are their medicines available to help to prevent the onset? Or do you then just know that it is coming?

@mariannewest - this study was strictly for a blood test that can determine if you have the disease before the symptoms actually show up. I assume the treatment would be the most effective if you caught it early.
