New School Placements

Public school teachers in Japan tend to change schools at least once every seven years, often more than that. It’s strange to me. They are frequently moved around and put in charge of different grades. An elementary school teacher might teach 5th grade for one or two years and then have to teach kindergarten for the next one or two years. Children could, and often do, have three or four principals here during their primary school years.

It’s strange to me. The junior high school I went to 25 years ago still has the same principal (and I thought he was in his 60s back then.) as it did when I attended it. I’m sure all of this change can be good for the teachers in Japan, but I often think about the effects it has on the students. One of the best things about having a good teacher or administrator is the ability to see him/her year after year.

For me, being an assistant teacher, this system means that I get bumped around from year to year. Since April 1st, I’ve been going to four new locations. This means that I’ve been adjusting to four new environments, four new sets of expectations, and a number of other factors. At the moment, it’s having quite the impact on my typical routine and I’m feeling very jostled. I’m looking forward to settling into a groove again

Is the thinking trying to keep teachers from getting stale from the same place? that seems strange to me as well. It would be very unsettling. I am one that doesnt mind consistency.

It’s not very good for consistency. That’s for sure. I’m not sure what started this trend, but it’s done in all businesses in Japan. People are expected to do various roles and learn many positions within a company over the course of their career, and they can be transferred to another branch store/office at any time (though this usually happens in April).

That does seem like a rather counter productive system for both teachers and students. To be the most effective as a teacher I would think it would be beneficial to get to know your students in order to best help them learn.

That, and I think it helps to teach the same age group over and over again to really learn what works for them. I’ve you work with 12 year olds for two years and then are asked to work with 6 year olds, you have to change your teaching style quite a bit and you have to create all new materials, etc. it’s basically like starting over again from scratch.
