Running my first 5k. 9-9-19steemCreated with Sketch.

I decided today was going to be my benchmark day. I was going to just keep running as long as I could. I don't plan on doing this again for quite some time, but I just had to see. For this benchmark, I was just testing duration and distance, not so much speed.

My run started off easily enough. I ran a bit faster than I intended for about a third of the first mile and pulled back some. During this time, all i was focused on was my breathing and movements. I'm sure other people get this as well. My legs weren't exactly sore, but it was the start of "the burn" i guess you could say. This set in around the 1.5 mile mark. Normally I would have cut it off here (which I would suggest, as I was adding more mileage weekly) for the run, but I pushed through it. Steady breathing and not stopping. Another tenth of a mile and the feeling started to go away. My legs felt just fine up to the 2.5 mile mark. Once I hit that the run had gotten much harder. I was so close, but didn't want to stop. I went ahead and pushed through it to the end.

and with that I had gotten my best time of 23 minutes and 7 seconds. A whole 10, almost 11, minutes off my last time on the 5k where I ran and walked. My legs are tired, but honestly, it feels good.

Along with that, I cut about 8 seconds off my mile during the first one. Not too bad. I think I still need to slow down some though if I'm going for distance.

For those that are interested, here are my times for each km. I kept it pretty close together outside of the last km.

All in all. I feel a bit accomplished. I ran my first "unofficial" 5k all the way through. There should be some running events starting in my area early in October and I'm planning on joining a 5k run for real.

Hope to see you all out there working hard. Keep it up.

Congratulations, that’s a great time for a 5K!

Thanks! I'm going to be trying to work that to a sub 20 time for my next goal.
