Spring Listened! {Half Marathon Training Begins}

in #actifit5 years ago

I know, I'm posting a lot about running lately. Can you blame me when spring has finally arrived? 😉 The birds were chirping today, sun shining, and the bees are back to buzzing. In no time the entire state will be blanketed in pollen, so there is a short window of time where getting outside is truly magical AND you're not breathing in your body weight in the yellow stuff! With my race on the calendar in 11 weeks, today was the perfect day to officially kick off training.

I took the weekend off of any physical activity after racing the last two weekends. We also went up to celebrate @dksart's mom's birthday, so it was a good time to not worry about trying to squeeze any training in. The short break was perfect to rest up and get ready for a longer run this afternoon. I'm sure the weather helped, but the run just felt great!

Six miles really isn't a problem with my current fitness level, yet somehow I was still a little anxious when setting out to see how it would really feel. I started out conservatively, then picked up the pace as I went along. The last mile I tried to dial it back to recover just a bit, but still finished strong. The only downside of the run was realizing the shoes I've been running in aren't going to cut it for distance training. I'm eyeballing the Merrells again since that was my go-to brand up until this current pair. They just came out with a new version of one of their classic minimal trail shoes that might be my birthday gift to myself. 🎉

I did load up on the recovery fuel with this vibrant salad along with roasted veggies and a veggie loaf for dinner. Gotta get in those antioxidants to help the body be ready for the next bout! This was the last of my latest yummy batch of homemade sauerkraut, so luckily I have fresh cabbage to make more.

All of my long runs are planned out for my training block, but I may need to go check out what @toofasteddie has on his menu for some speed workouts. 😉

Hoping you all had a fantastic Tuesday, as well!

Get it run! I’m running a 5k soon. I need all the running post :)

Oh nice! When is your 5k? Have you been training for it? :)

So I’ve never heard of Meryl’s… why are they the ish running shoe? I know running shoes are so personal anyway. We all have a favorite :)

Haha, they are the ish for me because they seem to fit my long, skinny feet pretty well. I just happened upon them when I first starting researching minimal shoes and found the style I really liked. I think they are constructed well and many are vegan-friendly which is a plus for me! They use the Vibram soles for their barefoot shoes, as do some other brands. The ones I'm looking at trying are still minimal, but they have added an extra layer of protection to help with trail running. That's the only complaint I really had in the past--if you step on a tiny pebble you feel it. I'm going to try to order them in the next few days as I don't want to halt my training progress, so I'll report back once I have a review. ;)

Rocking it with 15k @plantstoplanks

Nice training regime. Keep it up.

Gaz

Thanks Gaz! Trying to stay consistent! That's usually the key for me. If I can stay on plan, I'll rock my runs out with no problem. :) Especially when the weather is so nice, haha!

Nice. You clearly have good discipline!

I'm not always the most motivated when I'm running. I'm more into cycling (need good weather) or football.

It really helps to have a race on the books. I enjoy running, but I tend to stay on track much better with a goal set. I don't want to sign up for a race and not be prepared come race day. I've gotta earn that medal! 😉

Sounds like the most perfect weather to be out running. Not too hot and not too much pollen. Your recovery salad looks so healthy. Great to work with a program of both exercises and diet. Both essential to continue being able to run to your heart's content. ♥︎♥︎⚖️♥︎♥︎

Thank you my friend! Yes, it was a glorious day to get moving outside! Felt so good to soak up the sun's rays. I definitely try to find the right balance of proper diet and fitness to keep my body functioning well. I know I feel my best and have the most energy to give back when I do!

this is a good time for running before the pollen count climbs to crazy level, not that I would know at the moment my knees do not let me run anymore, but from when I did I did know the right shoes were very important, and even for walking now I have to find the right shoes, or I end up with real aches with all the walking I do, which reminds me I do need to go and look for new shoes this weekend
Good luck with your training and for the upcoming Half Marathon

Shoes really make all the difference in the world! I was just talking to my boyfriend's mom about that this weekend. She sounds like she's got the start of Plantar Fasciitis, and I think it is mostly because she has been wearing boots to walk the dog since it has been really rainy here this winter. I don't think the boots fit her really well, thus causing the pain. Hopefully she switches back to her comfortable sneakers now that the spring is coming!

I hope you find some good new shoes, too, and thank you for the well wishes as I train for this next race!

Having plantar Facitilitus I do know that the right shoes are key, I didnt not look after my feet when I used to run and do marathons properly, mind you there was not the options available like there are now,
