시계를 보니12시 10분전이다. 직원 식당으로 걸어간다. 4층까지 계단으로 걸어 올라간다. 계단을 이용하는 것이 일상이 됐다.
메뉴는 비빔밥이다. 고기를 뺀 비빔밥을 달라고 아주머니께 부탁한다. 상추와 콩나물과 밥을 비빈다. 고추장을 넣지 않고 간장을 넣는다. 양념간장이 밴 두툼한 두부찜이 쟁반 위에 네줄로 정렬해서 놓여있다. 나는 그중에 세 조각의 두부를 내 식판에 옮겨담는다. 더 담을 것인지 0.1초 동안 생각한다. 눈과 몸은 이미 그곳을 지나쳐간다. 본능과 생각이 일치하지 않을 때가 많다. 많이 먹으면 않된다는 뇌의 명령을 어기고 손은 음식을 넘치도록 퍼담고 있고 뭔가 잘못되고 있다는 희미한 느낌이 일어나고 본능적으로 몸속에 영양분을 축적하려는 유전자의 명령은 혼란 속에 빠진다.
