My Actifit Activity Log [10.29.2018] THE PARALLEL LINES OF OVERWHELM AND PROCRASTINATION.

Living today in the over prompted modern age of digital connectivity, the internet, and computer technology has most of us pretty overwhelmed. This isn’t a very healthy emotional state that is certain.

From the ping of emails to the ring of phones the tools that were supposed to take away work only seem to give us more to do... and now our expectations are to do increasingly more with less by fitting it in-between all the activities we try to fill our days with. Before, these were the moments when we were able to decompress and feel like sane human beings again...

But now there doesn’t seem to be any time to even take a breath of fresh air! It’s no wonder so many of us feel the pressure and anxiety in the form of overwhelm.

We think that if we could just get motivated... if we could just get off the couch and sign up for that gym class... if we could just do more... after all! Isn’t the point of all this to do more! Aren’t we supposed to have it all?! Doesn’t the world need to be saved by our significance?!

So the anxiety mounts and we try to multi-task our way around like super-man or super-girl! Until we hit the wall, burn both ends of the candle, crash and burn baby burn! Overwhelm rears it’s ugly head and before we realize what is happening to us we begin to procrastinate.

Unconsciously we undermine our potential by unwittingly dialing into the chime of a thousand things competing for our attention. And it gets worse! Pretty soon we’re not doing the things we know we should do to be health and happy because if we can’t do things the “right” way it’s better not to do them at all... excuses excuses excuses... but nope! It’s not our fault because we live in a world of unending responsibility. We take on the world and answer that email or ringing phone. We say, “Yes!” to every thing because it could be “the opportunity of a lifetime...”

and that’s when we spread ourselves thin “like, butter over to much bread.” -Bilbo Baggins

Answering every prompt from multiple prompt angles means saying, “Yes!” And the more we say, “Yes!” the weaker our, “Yes!” becomes until it’s meaning is all but devoid of reason and sense...

We think our “problem” is that we are... well! Lazy! If only we could dig deeper and find it in ourselves to do MORE!

But here’s the thing... sometimes it’s not about doing more... it’s about doing less! Far less! It’s about saying, “No.” more often to increase the value of your, “Yes!” Detoxing and simplifying can be liberating! Because let’s be honest here! We are finite human beings with a limited 24 hour day! Not super hero’s from another dimension!

Less is more! Not more is more... that’s right! We don’t need more to be effective. We need less! This is the way we Focus or energies towards what really matters! What really has value and what we really care about. This is where meaning comes from! We are not lazy! Far from it! We are, rather, overwhelmed! Conditioned to think that our life is without significance and meaning because we are not going after EVERYTHING life “has to offer”.

Don’t get me wrong... we CAN have everything life has to offer... Can’t isn’t a part of my vocabulary as a personal trainer! I believe in the unlimited potential to achieve whatever we set our mind to! But having a realistic view on the resources of the time and energy we have is necessary for success because it allows us the frame of mind necessary to make great things a reality... and actually enjoy them.

Compounding our results positively comes from daily, consistent action towards one specific goal. This takes drive, determination, and focus! It means prioritizing what’s important... and letting the rest go!

Without this realization... life gets pretty frustrating... (Another emotional state that destroys gratitude, focus and the subsequent positive results.)

So there you have it! Some of my pondering about maximizing positive results by knowing who I am, what I want and how I’m going to get there.

If your frustrated and overwhelmed. If your lacking energy, motivation, and drive. If your a HUGE procrastinator. Then perhaps it’s time for you to set some S.M.A.R.T. Goals! (Specific. Measurable. Action Orientated. Realistic. Timed)
