Remastering with AI and Machine learning.

in #ai5 years ago

AI-enabled Super Resolution techniques using Generative Adversarial Network techniques are starting to revolutionise pre-HD TV shows and movies.

Now literally anyone can upscale old footage towards HD scale and quality using off-the-shelf software such as Gigapixel.

It will never be as perfect as a studio remaster, but it's fast, cheap, and reasonably effective.

We can expect 'pirates' to be a lot faster at 're-releasing' classic TV shows than the studios will. If the only way to access the definitive version of a beloved franchise is by ripping it off, then that's what's gonna happen.

Studios should jump on these techniques quickly, and release upscaled versions of fan favorites to Netflix, etc, double-time.

Star Trek is a rarity as it was shot on film instead of videotape, which retains a lot more quality to work with. With some additional tweaks, however, even shows shot on videotape could be re-rendered with fixed chroma offset and color cast with results that look surprisingly contemporary.
