Albuquerque Origins

Albuquerque, New Mexico was named after this guy:

Francisco Fernández de la Cueva y de la Cueva (1666-1733) the 10th Duke of Alburquerque (note the extra 'r'). He was Viceroy of New Spain at the time of the city's founding in 1706. Quite the looker to be sure! He must have got his handsome features from his father:

Francisco Fernández de la Cueva, 8th Duke of Alburquerque.

These guys could surely be featured on the hit gameshow "Troll or Nobleman?" Anyways, they were Dukes of the Old World Alburquerque:

This is the fortified town of Alburquerque in the Badajoz province of Spain, in the far west near the Portuguese border.
The origin of the name of the town is uncertain. It is believed to stem from Latin, alba quercus, or "the white oak".[1]

The New Mexican village was founded as a strategically located military outpost and sheep herding hub along the Camino Real, which connected northern New Mexico to Mexico City far to the south. But long before this, the area was home to the Pueblo tribes, descendants of the ancient Chaco Culture who were themselves descended from Archaic era basket-weaving peoples that have inhabited this land for 10,000 years.

These ancient populations have left their marks on the landscape, such as in the famous petroglyphs on the city's west side.

The area that is now Albuquerque was host to a dozen long-established Tewa pueblos in 1706, as well as a number of temporary encampments of Apaches, Utes, and Navajos who had only arrived in New Mexico a few years ahead of the Spanish.
