Rommel Piet (Ulog #40)

in #alldutchenglish5 years ago

Being non-natives to the country of our residence (Netherlands), we are slowly learning all the traditions of our adopted country at the same time that our oldest daughter comes in contact with them (hopefully one or two steps ahead, although, last year we screwed up the Pakjesavond... and did it on the wrong night!).

One of the most most awaited days of the school year (for the kids at least), is the arrival of Rommel Piet to the school. Literally translated as Messy Piet, he is one of the helpers of Sinterklaas, however with a bit of a messy streak (all these different flavours of Piets reminds me very much of Mr Men...).

Anyway, on this day (yesterday), Rommel Piet comes into the school over the evening before and makes a complete mess of the school! Often leaving black handprints (Pass, I'm not going into the Zwarte (black) Piet question!) and just overturning and making a huge mess of the school and classrooms (oddly enough, the teacher's rooms tend to be untouched... conspiracy?).

Anyway, here are a few photos of the chaos from my daughter's classroom this year!

Here is a short video from a different school of what was going on!

Sort:

This brings back some memories of my own childhood. While we didn't call them Rommel Pieten, they did the same sort of shenanigans at our school. We'd also see them run by the windows of our classrooms and make funny faces while the teacher wasn't watching.

We really looked forward to Sinterklaas all year. I can say that we usually didn't learn much in school on the day before Sinterklaas came. :P

Haha... I think the Pieten were there today, on the 5th of December. Definitely, nothing done except for eating a ton of pepernoten! I'm still finding them in various pockets and gloves and bags...

That's quite an interesting tradition. I've never heard of anything like that before! It seems like fun for Rommel Piet but not so much for the people that have to clean up. lol.

Ah, the kids help clean up... they seem to enjoy putting things back in order after the chaos!

What a cool tradition first I had heard about it but I can see why the kids look forward to it

Yeah, they have lots of fun discovering all the chaos that has been wrought!

It's perfect! The mess shows that the kids enjoy every single moment in there!
But I'm one with you, We should hire a group of privat2r investigators and get to the bottom of the conspiracy....those teachers must be up to something naughty...!!

Thanks for sharing

Yes... there is definitely something fishy going on here...

One of the most most awaited days of the school year (for the kids at least), is the arrival of Rommel..

Context is everything here
:))

Local customs are weird and awesome at the same time.. All over the world:)

Haha... yes, one of the most awaited days of the school year for parents is the BEGINNING of the school year!

This prooves things do/can change here as in my time there were no Rommelpieten. We just pulled the beard of Sinterklaas....

Ha... just to make sure it was the real Sinterklaas and not someone dressed up?

Weird, I had thought that the Rommelpieten were a long standing tradition, I wonder when that started then...

i remember i was one of the culprit of my classroom's wall-art messyness. But my school authority never took any actions to clean those up.

Ha... in this case, it is Santa's helpers... or I do start to suspect others!

I bet the kids are all excited about it! Such a cool tradition!

Yep! They love discovering all the chaos that the Pieten have wrought overnight!

What fun for year end buildup, who cleans up after, bet the children so may as well let your hair down and have loads of fun with run-up to holidays @bengy

The kids clean up during the day (well, at least at our school)... they sort of enjoying finding all the things that have been put out of place, and putting them back in order!

Hahahaha, what a great and funny tradition! I am sure the kids love it.

Yes, they love the chaos!
