Steem Basic Income Giveaway (What defines you?)

in #alldutchenglish5 years ago

Thanks for so many movie recommendations and favourites in the last post! There are many many things that I now want to try and see if I can get hold of to watch!

Anyway, this week's topic is one that is particularly interesting to me. It is about what defines our identity. As a musician, I notice that a lot of creative professionals define their identity very much with their "work". As such, they can get quite caught up if things (performances) don't go their way, and the external (and peer) appreciation of their art is very much tied to their happiness.

Their sense of self and self-worth can often be at the mercy of factors outside their control. I'm not sure if that is a healthy way to be, but it does seem to be the case for many people I know.

My Question

  1. How would you define your identity?

My sample answer

Unsplash

Well, I'm a musician... however, I don't really tie my identity so heavily to what I do. Despite the fact that I enjoy playing and seem to not be disasterous at it, it isn't what I think about day in and day out (unlike some musicians that I know!). I find that I enjoy many interests from my past life in studying Science, and so I feel like that is a part of my identity, the logic and rational analysis that is part of that field.

I am a gamer, I've loved games for as long as I remember. Computer games mostly, but also board games... which in combination with the science, leads me down the path of identifying as a nerd! A label which I wear proudly!

I'm a father, and I take great pride in watching and enabling my kids to learn... and I think I'm a decent partner to my wife! Unexciting, but loyal and dependable!

So, I guess... I would define myself as a unexciting, but stable person... with an identity that isn't concentrated in one area... I'm a nerd, a gamer, a father, a musician and a husband!

Rules

  1. Upvote if you want, it increases the payout and then I can hopefully sponsor more people.
  2. Resteem is NOT neccessary, but the more people see this, the more the people will be likely to be sponsored.
  3. In the comments, answer as best as you can the questions that are posed in the "My Questions"!
  4. I have added a small Steem-Bounty to the post, so that everyone who replies with a valid entry will get something back. If I give your post a small upvote, it is valid (also, subscribe to @dustsweeper for maximum benefit!).
  5. I will be sponsoring as many people as this post pays out in liquid SBD/STEEM. Also I will kick in at least the required amount to round up to the full number. Winner is by random generator after a shortlisting of quality comments!

Steem Basic Income

One of the first communities that I came in contact with at the beginning of my time at Steemit was @steembasicincome. As a author starting out on your fresh new Steemit account, Steemit can be a daunting and lonely place to be. OFten, it can feel like you are posting into an abyss with no one listening and with no ability to grow out of the situation. A share of Steem Basic Income gives you a guaranteed vote on one post a day, thus giving you a small but over time cumulative support to your account to help grow you out of your initial wilderness!

With this post, I want to help sponsor people who might not even have the spare 1 STEEM that is required for registration. So, when this post pays out, I will sponsor people depending on the payout of this post. Basically, I will round up the SBD payout from this post and then that will be the number of people I will sponsor. (So, if the payout is 2.3 SBD, I will sponsor 3 people). OF course, this is not simply an altruistic move, as the sponsor of a Steem Basic Income share also gets a share, so it is a great way to help others whilst helping yourself!

Last week's winners

The last post paid out 0.006 SBD and 1.703 STEEM in liquid earnings. So, that would make 2 shares.

The winners by random draw are:

I think its a difficult question it can be seen in different ways and something that I feel changes with time while some would say I am defined by being the "sensible one" which I keep hearing often lately but I don't feel this is fully correct, probably more of a rebel when it comes to society and it's ideals but I'am also into games alot so am I really more of a nerd..one thing I find interesting is how others also seem to struggle with this question.

It is a tricky question... it is hard to pull out something that defines us, as we are defined by everything that we are... I guess the easiest and most accurate answer would be... I am defined by "me"...

Wow, difficult question this week @bengy.
How would I define my identity?
...
As 'me'?
I don't think there's a solid answer to that. There are so many different aspects to being me.

I'm the everlasting student ánd teacher, the thinker with an endless stream of doubts. The hypersensitive, and thus super-empathic person who tries to live without judging others. The psytrance scene insider, the not-so-easy to live with wife, the cat lover. The insecure and chaotic addict...

I'm everything and nothing, and tomorrow it will all be the other way around...

How would I define my identity?
...
As 'me'?

Actually, that is probably the best way to define it! and probably the answer that I would prefer to give... it is so hard to define and pull out bits of your own character as it is all interwoven so tightly!

PS: None of what you describe has ever come across in my interaction with you here!

Lol, so maybe I forgot to add 'great pretender' ;0)

That's exactly the point, I'm all that, and all the opposite things at the same time.
Who I am depends on so many things...

I actually prefer the 'Guess the word'-challenge, lol. That one is a lot easier. I think it was the comment that took me the longest to write ever. I started, then deleted everything to start over a couple of times.

Lol, normally, when writing a comment is as much work as this one was, I just let it be and move on to the next. But I'm also addicted to self-analysis, so I couldn't just leave. Difficult, but interesting :0)

Ha ha, I have an easier question in mind for this evening...

What defines me? Sex

If I'm getting laid, I'm happy. If I'm not getting laid, I'm deeply unhappy.

ummm... okay! That was unexpected!

Apologies, I got to your entry late, and you missed the bounty. I will send the amount manually.

What can I say? I'm simple-minded :)

And you never need to apologise, bengy. Thanks very much for the steem :)

What define identity, i think is behaviour, personality and morals embedded in Someone.
As for me i think my behaviours, attitude, habit they all define my identity

Haha... cryptic, but also true!

I identify as an 'observer' and 'story teller'. A person that sees a lot, both visually, which is leading to photographs, or tiny 'moments', leading to blog posts, as well as interactions and behaviour, which means I can interpret how people are feeling and/or create stories in my mind. It all works together, my photography, love for stories and human emotion, my background in studying psychology... And that together is more or less 'me'. The rest is just an extension of me observing.

That's quite interesting, I do find observing and watching to be also quite engaging... for me it is less the visual, but also listening to music (well, in rehearsals and performances...), which sometimes gets me in trouble, as I will laugh at something that caught my attention!

My kids (well, more so the older one) seem to be also like that... she loves to stand back and watch. Really paying attention to little things that are happening... for a while we were a bit worried that she wouldn't interact with the other kids, but it isn't a problem!

Simply put. I'm what most people consider Goth. Yes those creepy dressed in black people that act depressed and listen to music resembling somewhere between Punk, Heavy metal, and an unidentifiable dying animal at 195 db. But in my experience Goth is much more than by appearance but by the ability to see art and beauty in dark themes. Music like The Cure, Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus back in the 80s and 90s sure shaped the core Gothic aesthetic but there are plenty of more newer bands like Depeche Mode, NIghtwish, Within Temptation etc expanded and broadened the sub genre. Since the Grand daddy punk years Goth has diversified into many sub-sub-genres where my style has been more in Retro Goth crossed with Japanese Harajuku fashion elements. I have mellowed out since my crazy days now that I have kids to care for, maybe I'm more like Semi-Goth.
My Steemit Introduction post
Oh, and behind closed doors, most Goths love to watch Mr Bean.

Haha! Goths are closet Mr. Bean lovers? I would never have picked that! Probably, Mr Bean is a closet Goth!

I have a Japanese friend that is into goth styles, but it isn't the classic stereotype that I would have had thought, perhaps it is what you are describing?

I'm an electrical engineer by practice but I've never felt like one. I feel my identity is that of boy that believes so much in humanity and information. I love to have and help people with information about just anything they don't know!

Sounds like you love sharing knowledge! That is a great trait to have, and one that is important to sparking the fire of curiosity in others!

Yeah, I feel better learning with others and I don't mind spending my entire day doing so 😏

Altough I have activities that I like to do a lot, I dont think these are what defines me.
Hobbys can change and so can interests. What really defines me is the urge to learn.
In sports, in knowlegde/science, in a social interaction and most important about myself.
I think no one will ever truly know oneself, but you can try to.
For it you just have to expose yourself to new situations every now and then.

Learning is a great trait to have as your defining characteristic! Indeed, our interests and hobbies can change... but the burning desire to learn, is just a great thing for opening up new ideas and paths!

Apologies, I got to your entry late, and you missed the bounty. I will send the amount manually.

Thanks for that!
And thank you for the question,
I told my girlfriend about it and it started a really great discussion about motivation and interest :)

Ha ha! Funny, as the question was born from a conversation that my wife had about similar things!

Great topic @bengy, especially for those of us in limbo right now. You gave me a shiney moment. I was going through entries for this week and saw the topic for this contest and here I am LOL.

What defines me? Instinctually I want to say I don't have a clue. Ultimately though, I think it's my drive to help others. If I can help it I don't want anyone to suffer in the ways that I have. If I make someone laugh or smile , I make some comment to the point of 'My work is done' or 'Goals are accomplished for the day.'

We never know what anyone is going through so just to show a small kindness goes a long way. With so my hate and anger all around it takes a toll on all of us and we have to make the conscious decision to not let it take over.

As far as anything else, is my willingness to accept people as they are and to learn from them. Like with you, I took music in grade school and thoroughly enjoyed it, but I didn't realize how much I did learn. You've given me a new appreciation for all forms of music .

Happy that this was a little moment of Shininess!

I think it is pretty hard to define ourselves in words... we are so much more than the parts that we can describe. Also, the description of ourselves in words also necessarily leans heavily on shared stereotypes that might just not be representative. For instance, when people find out that I'm a technerd and a gamer, they tend to be surprised that I can speak normally to other humans and have somehow managed to find a wife and have children....

On the other hand, people that find out that I'm a musician, seem surprised as I'm not an outgoing "artistic" sort of person....

...but it is great that you find that such a large part of your identity is defined by the way that you can interact and affect other people's lives in a positive way, even if it is a small thing. I think that these little things, they can often mean much more to the person on the receiving end than the giver can ever realise!

I agree. I have to remind myself that sometimes I won't see a result and I really just need to take things on faith. Not to expect a result, to be content with my actions.
