A glimpse at the history and the theatres of the Guthrie Theatre

Founded in 1963 by Sir Tyrone Guthrie, the Guthrie Theater is the place, where the people who harbor an interest in classical literature and plays will find their amusement. This theatre quenches the thirst of literature students on an academic level when theatrical production of plays by early playwright is given various adaptations by great performers who exhibit their compelling acting skills.

Not only this theatre is dedicated to promoting the dramatic works of early literature, but it also fosters the ground for the emergence next generation of performers and artists. At the Guthrie theatre, an amalgamation of classic and contemporary plays are produced and acted on the three prime stages under the literary guidance of the mentor, Joseph Haj. This theatre has received a state-level recognition and excellence.

Let us now look at the history of the Guthrie theatre and the reason it came into being:

Upon the inauguration of the theatre, the first play that was performed on the stage as Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The reason why the theatre came into existence was that Guthrie and his two associates were not satisfied with the theatrical productions at Broadway. They believe that the plays performed their lack of professional level of production and performance and there was a need of a resident theater where these standards can be met. Therefore upon its construction after 1959, the Guthrie Theatre stands for the rise of resident theatre movement which operates on almost no profit basis. Since its creation, the theatre has always aspired for excellence in theatrical, artistic production and their determination to achieve the high level of recognition has remained constant throughout.

Guthrie theatre, in the beginning, started with only four productions in summer with the help of the minimal staff. However, now this theatre has turned in to a complex theatrical organization that employs 500 people and runs performances all year round.

At present, the Guthrie theatre is situated in the heart of Minneapolis near the Mississippi River. The tourists on their visit to the theater at the new location will see that under the new construction design, the theatre has three main theatres in its Auditorium. They include the signature thrust stage that has the seating capacity of 1,100 audiences, proscenium stage having 700 seating and the black box.

At level 5 of the theatre, there are dining places such as café’s and coffee shops, and there is a renowned seafood restaurant Sea lounge.
