The history of the Old Penitentiary Building
The governor of Sonora, Luis Torres, inaugurated the building in 1908 that was used a prison. The prisoners of the building were the same who worked towards the construction of the Old Penitentiary. At the time of Torres, the building was considered as one of the most hygienic and well-maintained building. Therefore several years later, that is in 1979, when the establishment of new rule on Sonora under the federal government took hold, the emerging organization with the name of National Institute of Anthropology and History and the Government of the State of Sonora gave consent and approval of the fact the Old Penitentiary can be used in a different way. Upon this consent, the management authorities of the Old Penitentiary building decided to conduct a collaborative work to restore the building and implement a new form of attraction that was the museum in it. Thus, the regional museum came into being that set the pace for the fostering of educational opportunities and conservation of culture in the society.
At present, the regional museum opens its doors for 18 permanent displaying halls and galleries. Also, there are separate five room where different exhibits are held according to different themes. Also, the museum hosts a small encapsulated auditorium that has the capacity of accommodating an audience of 130 people. In this auditorium many cultural events that have a strong moral take place so that people get hands-on opportunity to learn about Sonoran cultural heritage through different genres. Furthermore, there is also a reproduction and INAH publication shop.
Majority of the collection in the museum is due to the efforts of the management and collaborative team of the Region museum who spend several years and ample effort in conducting archeological researches in the region. Among the notable collections were the stone elements that are dated 11 thousand years back.
