Situated in the far southeastern end of the city of Colorado, Aurora Reservoir is a vast artificial lake or impoundment. The lake covers the area of 31,650 acres as the three minor streams flow into three bays of the reservoirs namely, the Lone Tree, Marina, and Senac. The Aurora reservoir provides drinking water to the city of Aurora and is also a leisure point.

The Aurora reservoir came in to being in 1990 and initially the purpose of it was to supply drinking water to the residents of Aurora. Earlier, the reservoir was separated from the main city neighborhood because it has miles on undeveloped grasslands and plains. In this respect, it was considered as the remote area of Aurora. However, over the time, these grasslands have become urbanized as the 3,500 new homes are being planned to be constructed in two commuter belts such as Beacon Point and South Shore. Moreover, with the development of the Southlands shopping mall and schools such as Cherokee Trail High School and Fox Ridge School, the area surrounding the reservoir has become commercialized and busy.

The reason why the Aurora Reservoir has gained popularity regarding awareness and tourist attendance is due to the swift development of the Denver-Aurora Metropolitan Area. Although many fun-filled and leisure activities persist in the reservoir, the management makes sure that the purity of the water remains intact because the water is still being used for drinking purposes. In this respect, only electric speed boats are allowed in the water of the artificial lake. A small swim beach is located in the reservoir area that is opened on a seasonal basis, and there is also a shack where rental equipment for boating is present.

There is also a separate beach area in the northwestern end of the lake which is designated for SCUBA divers. This spot is a center of attention for many local scuba diving schools so that they can bring their students for trials and give them certificates for their diving. Moreover, the reservoir is also an attractive spot of the fisherman because of the abundance of Trout, Catfish, and Walleye in the waters of the lake. This spot is also reputable because recently, the largest Catfish in the whole of Colorado was caught that broke all records of fish caught locally.
