The Lake of Isles in Minneapolis is integrated with Lake Cedar and Lake Calhoun of the Chain of lakes. The Isles of lakes covers the area of 109 acres including 3 miles of shorelines that have walking and bicycle ridings treks. The lakes are 31 feet deep.

In winters this lake becomes the popular point for ice hockey, and as a part of New Year celebration, the lake becomes a spot for a cheering hockey game toppled with the yummy delight of roasted marshmallows and hot chocolate.

In Minneapolis, the Lake if isles are renowned for three things. One, for its wooded islands, second for its long northern side and thirdly for the beautiful houses the surround the neighborhoods of Kenwood, East Isles and Lowry Hills. Earlier many small islands and swamplands used to exist on the lake, and this lake was used from the time of early settlers in Minneapolis. Two of the islands that previously existed on the south shore of the lakes were transformed into grasslands and meadows. As a result, the lake was developed and scoured what it is currently now in size and area.

The Mike Island and the raspberry island in the northern side of the lake are the only remaining wooded ones have protected wildlife in them. The entry to these Islands is a restriction for the general public and tourist.

Let us now look at how the Lake of Isles developed over the time:

In the early 20th century, the local Dakota people combed the four island lakes to create the Lake of isles that we see currently. The materials that were used for scouring include compost and mud created 36 acres of grasslands around the lakesides and two islands in the middle of the lake. However, due to the pressure from municipal development and the settling of these dredging materials, the shoreline was uneven, and the water quantity of the lake decreased considerably. Thus, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation board are now highly active in alleviating the shorelines, redesigning the grasslands and building twelve stones lines across the lake to ease accessibility through a contract of a multiyear project.

Lake of Isles was also mentioned in the song, Rock n Roll is alive composed by Prince and some of the scenes from the orientation episode of the Mary Tyler Moore show were shot about the Lake of Isles.
