The California Living Area Museum is also popularly known as CALM. It is a zoo in California's Bakersfield. The major focus of CALM is on the animals and plants that are native to the region of California, especially the Kern Country. The Zoological Association of America (ZAA) has accredited the California Living Area Museum. Back in the year 1983, CALM was founded. The major purpose of establishing CALM was to provide a proper place to both render help to orphaned wild animals as well as to educate the public about the general native wildlife. The museum treats and releases the animals that get well-treated and get capable of releasing into the wild. While for the others who do not get capable enough to be released in the wild are taken care of in the facility itself.

Back in the year 1998, all the various everyday operations of the California Area Living Museum was transferred to KCSOS (Kern Superintendent of Schools offices). The featured botanical gardens and the zoo officially became a school site. Through various on-site programs, CALM imparts education to over thirteen thousand school kids of Kern Countries annually. There are also many programs that are presented in an off-site manner to community events, classrooms, and organizations. Calm is spread across a huge space of fourteen acres. It features a wide variety of animals and plants across all across the Kern Country.

Some of the natural exhibits that CALM features include a black bear exhibit that is open, an underground house for reptiles, an exhibit of California Cats like bobcats and mountain lions, an exhibit of the bird of prey that houses owls, hawks, and eagles, a deer yard, a contact zone for domestic animals, a mammal round featuring various fox species, and a waterfowl pond that keeps attracting fall and spring migrants. You can also find some of the endangered species on the exhibits. It also features more than eighty species of animals that are medically un-releasable. Kids love this place to the core.

It operates every day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The admission to the zoo costs 9 USD for adults below sixty years of age, 7 USD for senior visitors of age sixty and above, 5 USD for kids of age group three to twelve. The entry for kids below three is absolutely free. There might be some veteran as well as military discounts applicable.
