The name of the museum is coined after the legendary and the most celebrated political artist of Mexico, José Guadalupe Posada. The reason why people mostly prefer to visit the museum is that it houses the majority of his renowned artistic masterpiece including his iconic work, La Catrina. Before we go into the further details as to what the museum has in hold for us, let us first shed some light on the greatest artist of Mexican history and beyond.
Majority of the critics and those who love to admire and appreciate the local Mexican art claim that the artist, after whom the museum has the name, José Guadalupe Posada, is considered as the pioneer of the modern, contemporary Mexican art. Therefore, the visit to the museum will not only mean that the visitors appreciate the art for art sake. Instead, by looking at the artwork, they can penetrate in the mind of the satirist artist who strived to bring out and unravel the themes that dominate the times. In this expansive museum, the visitors will also realize how blatantly each and every artwork of the artist speaks out the social problems that were rampant in the city of Mexico. Moreover, apart from the works of Posada, the museum also displays the notable artworks of the artists who brought about similar themes in their art just like Posada.
If we look at the time when Posada first opens his eyes, it was the time of 1852 when famine was rampant in society. When he started to adopt art as his career, he was first employed by a publishing company to do some illustrative work for them. With his first job, he started climbing the success ladder, and he quickly became familiar with skeletal figures, using Calaveras and started to target at political events through his drawings. Thus, over time, his popularity grew as he becomes one of the most prominent artists of the City of Mexico whose drawings and illustrations spoke the critical examination he has for the society surrounding him. In this way, his artwork eventually found the medium of expression and display in the form of the museum that speaks his name. In 1972, after the museum was completed and open its doors to the public, his artwork was speculated, admired and critically assessed under various emerging approaches by the massive audience.
At present, the museum contains 3000 pieces of permanent artwork that are the masterpiece of Posada along with numerous other works by other artists. The best thing about each artwork on exhibit is that it carries significant information about the work such as background and dominant themes.
