The California Rural Cemetery Act passed in 1859, led to the establishment of the cemetery by a group of settlers who came into East Bay with the purpose of attaining permanent residence and colonizing the area in 1863. This cemetery covers the area of 91 acres of land in Oakland.

The tourists, on the visit to this scenic cemetery, will see that a lot of prominent individuals of California have attained a final resting place in this area. Moreover, there is a separate area within the confinements of the graveyards, which is dedicated to the graves of wealthy Millionaires. This section is termed as the Millionaire row. The section is distinctive from others through the presence of magnificent crypts that pay homage to the wealthy individuals buried in the Millionaire Row.

The reason why tourists are attracted towards this place on their visit of Oakland is that of the presence of these grand stone chambers that store coffins and relics of the wealthy and the beauty and serenity of the area.

A panoramic view of the back of the cemetery can be seen by looking out through the San Francisco Bay. The landscape architect, Olmsted who has the credit of making the exceptional designs of the New York City Park, Stanford University and UC Berkeley has undertaken the construction design of the cemetery as well. He believes that the cemetery should be given such a design that the people are visiting the place who see a perfect commune of human souls with nature. That’s why by visiting the cemetery the visitors would feel like taking a walk down the memory lanes of the 19 and 20th century where American romanticism, sentimental approaches were at the peak. In that era, cemeteries were given a park-like aura where the human soul connects with the harmony of nature after death. Moreover, Olmsted also drew inspiration from American Transcendentalism and incorporated in the cemetery grand Parisian monuments and broad boulevards

The Saint Mary Cemetery and the Chapel of Chimes are situated next to the Mountain View Cemetery. A lot of prominent individuals of San Francisco such as politicians, industrialists, veterans, upholders of Art and Culture, local historians and other individuals who had made a remarkable difference have attained a prestigious resting place in the cemetery so that their work can be honored and remembered.
