Mayan World Museum of Mérida is one popular attraction of the city. It is nestled at the northern end of the avenue named Paseo Del Montejo. This is quite an old museum and a must to be included an attraction in your sightseeing tour of Merida. Mayan World Museum of Mérida features four massive permanent galleries along with two temporary galleries that boast exhibits for the travelers to adore. These galleries are nestled in an award-winning building. The massively sized museum is spread in an expanse of almost two hectares. The setup features three different levels that conveniently represent three different worlds of the Maya, namely the underworld, the sky, and the earth. The shape of the main building is quite unique and attractive. It is developed as a ceiba tree. The ceiba tree is the sacred tree for the Maya for the lifetime. The beautiful layout of the museum conveniently matches the mission of this renowned museum. The museum works towards promoting, discovering, and further identifying the rich culture of the Maya.

The various permanent galleries of the museum quite a much reflect the mission of the museum. The galleries are dedicated to Ancient Maya or the Prehispanic Maya, the Maya of Today, and the Maya of Yesterday. The Maya of Yesterday begins at the conquest of the Spanish. Additionally, there is another gallery that the museum features which specifically looks at the Rich Culture and the Natural Habitat. There is another interesting area of the museum that has been recently discovered, The Chicxulub Gallery. This gallery specifically speaks about the impact location and the crater in the Yucatan. This area is still continued to be investigated for its impact on the world in the historical environmental zone.

The fine architecture of the museum is quite a noticeable feature for the travelers. It is a combined effort of various designers including Josefina Rivas Acevedo and Enrique Duarte Aznar amongst various other popular names. They also received a partnership award back in the year 2012 for this innovative project. The permanent display of the museum includes one thousand and sixty artifacts including various prehistoric artifacts and artifacts from the Spanish colonization times. All these various artifacts reflect the relationship of Maya to the modern art, culture and ancient history. The museum stays closed on Tuesdays. The visiting hours of the museum range from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on all the other days except Tuesdays.
