Monumento a Los Niños Héroes - The Prestige of Irapuato City

Monumento, a Los Niños Héroes, is constructed to commemorate the young cadets of the military school who defended and gave their lives in the battle of Chapultepec on September 12 and 13, 1847, during the war against the invasion of the United States into Mexico.

The monument is located in the first section of Bosque de Chapultepec. The Hemicycle is formed by six white columns in a semicircle that protects the figure of a woman with her right arm proudly embraces a young man, in his free hand a flag. The monument was designed by the sculptor Ernesto Tamariz and the Architect Enrique Aragón is sober and cold built in white Carrara marble that prevails throughout the work. The monument was inaugurated in 1952, on September 13, honors are given to the Children Heroes, young soldiers who fought heroically in defense of the Chapultepec Castle in front of the American army.

In 1846 the war with the United States began since it had like objective to be appropriated by the territories of Arizona, Alta California, and New Mexico. The Mexicans faced almost two and a half years against the US Army, beyond its military capacity, the social and political fractures of the elite power groups of the rulers of that time who did not stop fighting with each other, even in front of a war.

The cadets who studied at the Military College clashed in battle, even though they had been ordered to leave the place. With 13 years of age Francisco Marques was the youngest of the children heroes and died of several bullet wounds, his body was found next to Juan Escutia east of the hill. Historian Salvador Rueda said that the defeat suffered at the Chapultepec Castle was seen as a shame, but with time, the perception of the event changed and it was therefore easy to spread the sacrifice of the cadets after several decades.

The cadet Fernando Montes de Oca, 18 years old, tried to defend the entrance to the Bosque de Chapultepec, in his attempt was shot by the US Army.
