Mount Washington is a mountain in Pittsburgh city which is famous for breath-taking views of the city. It is located on the south banks of the Ohio River and Monongahela River. Earlier it was known as Coal Hill as it provided easy access to Pittsburgh coal seam’s outcrop due to which many mines used to operate from there. In 1976 it was named Mount Washington. It provides amazing views of the Pittsburgh skyline due to its elevation adjacent to the river valley and downtown.

Mount Washington served as a strategic vantage point for the early inhabitants during the battles that used to occur. Once coal was discovered in the hillside, the industrial revolution took place in Pittsburgh. There was a rapid expansion of the city during this phase, and many people migrated to this city as employment opportunities were plenty. With the inflow of people, housing started opening on top of Mount Washington, and many funicular inclines were constructed for transportation purpose. Post the mining boom the area was named as Mount Washington to honor the first President. The industries that Mount Washington was known for don’t exist anymore, and only two funiculars remain. The neighborhood of the mountain has now become a residential area.

Duquesne and Monongahela are the two oldest running funiculars in the world at this mountain. Riding these inclines is a fun experience. Grandview Avenue near the Monongahela incline provides stunning views of the city while facing downtown directly. From the Duquesne Incline, you can enjoy the outstanding angle orientation view that is featured in many pictures. Close to Duquesne incline, the point of view statue makes for unobstructed views of the city and has a gorgeous statue of George Washington and Guyasuta. There is a shopping district at the hilltop that has coffee shops, fine-dining restaurants, pizza parlors, etc. for visitors to enjoy. There is a lot of green space in and around the mountain where you can enjoy a picnic with the family. Kids love playing in the recreational areas in Emerald View Park that surrounds Mount Washington.

Visiting Mount Washington is an amazing experience, and many group tours are also available here. For groups of ten people or more, there is a free tour of The Duquesne Incline's historic upper station. For smaller groups, the fee is $3.5 round trip for adults and $1.75 round trip for children. The tours include the pictorial history of Pittsburgh’s industry, sports venues, incline, natural disasters, etc. A visit to the machine room is also a part of the tour. Gift shops are also present at the mountain to buy souvenirs.
